Volkswagen recruits battery experts from Apple

A persistent rumor has lingered in recent years: Apple wants to develop its own autonomous vehicle that will one day integrate into the ecosystem. So far there have been dozens of reports on the subject, but Apple has not yet officially confirmed the development. One point that fueled the rumor mill was the employment of Soonho Ahn at the time.

Because in December 2018 Apple recruited the battery experts from Samsung, for many this was an indication that the company wanted to research battery technologies for a potential Apple car. Of course, the employment could also have simply benefited the range of existing devices, after all, the battery management of iPhone, iPad and Co has improved in recent years.

Either way, the rumors about Ahn at Apple are now coming to an abrupt end. Because another group grabbed the expert next: Volkswagen.

At first just a rumor, now officially confirmed, the Volkswagen Group poached Soonho Ahn from Apple and appointed him CTO of the Group’s battery division. With this, the car manufacturer shows once again that it would like to make the turn to electromobility in the future.

But that is not all. Volkswagen also looked around in its own country and poached a high-ranking employee of the BMW Group from the competition. So it will be exciting to see what VW will do with the new resources.
