WhatsApp Web on iPad: this is how it works

Secretly we are all waiting for it: a real, official app from WhatsApp for the iPad. There are regular rumors that there will even be an app someday, but so far almost every trace is missing.

The head of WhatsApp (Will Cathcart) has even said in an interview that they are “very eager” to make an iPad app. Unfortunately, he does not attach a concrete date to the release of such an app. Cathcart does realize that many people have been waiting for it for a long time.

But what now? If you still want to use WhatsApp on your iPad, there is still an option. You do this by connecting WhatsApp on your iPhone to WhatsApp Web on your iPad. The great thing about this is that your iPhone doesn’t even have to be an online one. However, your iPad must have an internet connection, otherwise you will not be able to send or receive messages.

Set up WhatsApp Web on iPad

Setting up WhatsApp Web on your iPad is a snap. You have to grab your iPhone with WhatsApp for that.

Set up WhatsApp Web on iPad

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone and tap ‘Settings’;
  2. Choose ‘Paired devices’ and tap ‘Pair a device’;
  3. Open Safari on your iPad and surf to web.whatsapp.com;
  4. Point your phone’s camera at the iPad screen to scan the code;
  5. You can now use WhatsApp on your iPad.

To make things even easier, you can also put a shortcut on your home screen. This way you can start WhatsApp Webb on your iPad just as quickly as an app. You do this as follows:

  • Tap the share icon at the top right (the square with the arrow) if you have WhatsApp on in Safari;
  • Scroll down and tap ‘Add to Home Screen’;
  • Change the name if necessary and tap ‘Add’.

You can’t do this on the iPad

WhatsApp Web on the iPad works almost as well as the real app on your iPhone. However, there are a few things that are not possible.

  • Deleting or deleting chats on your iPad;
  • Call or message someone if they are using an outdated version of WhatsApp;
  • View live location on your iPad;
  • Create and view mailing lists on your iPad;
  • Send messages with link previews via WhatsApp Web;
  • You will not receive any notifications.

Also note that you must have Safari with WhatsApp open to see new messages. By the way, your iPhone doesn’t need to stay online to use WhatsApp on your iPad, but your paired devices will be unpaired if you don’t use your phone for 14 days or more.

Unlink WhatsApp on iPad

If you want to unpair the iPad itself, tap ‘Settings > Paired devices’ in WhatsApp on your iPhone and the device that is paired. Then tap ‘Log out’.
