Use iCloud keychain in Windows: Apple is working on a Chrome extension

No time right now?

Anyone who uses their iPhone or iPad in combination with a Windows computer will soon be able to access the passwords stored in the iCloud via the Chrome browser.

Apple has updated iCloud for Windows 10. With the new version you can not only synchronize your cloud files, photos, e-mails, contacts and appointments with your Windows computer, but for the first time also your website passwords stored in the iCloud keychain. You can then access these passwords via a Chrome extension in the Google browser. However, there is still one small problem: The browser extension is not yet available.

If you select the check box to sync your passwords in iCloud for Windows, a login screen will appear. Please note that, according to Apple, you can only use the feature if you have activated two-factor authentication for your iCloud account. After logging in, a message will appear stating that you have to download the associated Chrome extension. The process currently stops here, however, as the download button leads you to a page in the Chrome web store that apparently does not yet exist.

It is currently unclear when the extension will be available. But since they are in the software and on Apple’s English language support website mentioned earlier, it should probably not take too long. The finished extension should theoretically also work on Microsoft’s Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and other Chromium-based web browsers.

Website passwords can be exchanged between iOS and Windows even without iCloud

If you use Chrome to manage website passwords on Windows and on your Apple devices, you don’t need the new iCloud function. If desired, the Google browser will automatically synchronize these passwords. The same applies to Microsoft’s Edge browser. You can of course also use a cross-platform password manager such as 1Password, Lastpass or Dashlane to have access to your passwords on different devices.
