Under-screen Face ID: When is it coming, Apple?

Apple is reportedly working on a new Face ID sensor that will be placed under your iPhone’s screen. But when will this new sensor appear?

Read on after the ad.

Apple is working on Face ID under the screen

The rumors that Apple is working on a new Face ID sensor have been around for some time. According to these rumors, Apple is planning to hide both the Face ID camera and the front camera under the screen. By hiding Face ID and the camera under the screen, the new iPhone gets a front that consists only of screen.

The new technology probably also ensures that the notch and the Dynamic Island disappear completely. The Dynamic Island is one of the most important new features of the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) and is expected to come to the entire iPhone 15 series. Now that Apple has said goodbye to the notch, the end of the Dynamic Island also seems to be in sight. When will Face ID disappear below the screen?

The new Face ID is coming sooner than you think

Ross Young, an expert in the field of displays, previously shared his expectations about the new Face ID technology. He predicted – in line with leaked photos – that the entire iPhone 15 series will get the Dynamic Island. The dynamic island would then disappear for the first time next year with the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Young has now adjusted his expectations, because according to the most recent rumors, Apple had to postpone the new Face ID technology for a year. According to the expert, this has to do with problems surrounding the Face ID sensor. This makes the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) the first iPhone without Dynamic Island and with the renewed Face ID under the screen.

If we follow Apple’s annual releases, the iPhone 17 will appear in 2025. That year we can therefore expect the new Face ID technology, which means that the iPhone no longer has Dynamic Island. This of course depends on the technological developments (or setbacks) that Apple may have to deal with in the near future.

Touch ID is also likely to return to the iPhone

Also interesting: a patent from Apple describes locking not only by Face ID, but also by gestures and Touch ID. So it is likely that the new iPhone with hidden sensors will get multiple ways to unlock the phone. So it is quite possible that Touch ID will return. The Touch ID sensor is then also concealed under the iPhone screen.

Touch ID is not expected to return until the first iPhones with Face ID appear below the screen. The development of Touch ID is therefore related to the release of the updated Face ID. If Apple is unable to place the sensor under the screen, Touch ID can also be incorporated in the button on the side. We previously saw this with the iPad 10, the iPad mini and the iPad Air.
