Elon Musk helped Ukraine a lot by unlocking Starlink satellite internet. The country attacked by Russia, on the other hand, did not like his ideas for possible peace scenarios, which Musk had voted on Twitter.
Broadband internet delivered via Elon Musk’s Starlink was worth its weight in gold for Ukraine, especially in the first few days after Russia’s incursion. The destruction of the communications infrastructure by the Russian army was in vain. The feared drone attacks by Ukrainian troops were also based on internet access.
Now, however, Musk seems to be messing with Ukraine – at least Kyiv and some officials reacted upset to a survey launched by the Tesla and SpaceX boss among his Twitter community of around one million followers.
In the tweet, Musk presented his ideas for a peace offer. He suggests that elections in the annexed areas such as Luhansk or Kherson should be repeated under UN supervision. If people decide differently this time, Russia will have to leave the territories.
In addition, according to Musk’s scenario, Crimea would remain part of Russia and the supply of water would be guaranteed. And: Ukraine must remain neutral and should not become part of NATO.
Not only the Twitter users: inside (in the survey the “No” predominates with 63 percent, with over 1.1 million votes cast) are mostly against Musk’s proposals for a possible peace, there are also harsh hailing from Ukraine Criticism.
Olexander Scherba, former Ukrainian ambassador to Austria and who has worked for the energy company Naftogaz for a year, was disappointed by Musk. It’s not just about the territories, it’s about the people. According to Scherba, what peace is for Musk is a crippled life for Ukrainians.
He couldn’t believe Musk would write something like this. With that he would pave the way for a new Hitler Scherba via Twitter.
Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office, took a similar tack. His “better peace plan” includes Ukraine liberating all of its territories – including “annexed Crimea”. Russia, on the other hand, must be demilitarized, and nuclear weapons should also be removed from Russia.
This means that the country can no longer threaten others, according to Podoljak. In addition, war criminals would have to be brought before an international tribunal. In the relevant survey received Podoliak’s proposal 95 percent yes votes from over 115,000 people who voted.
The outgoing Ambassador of Ukraine in Germany Andriy Melnyk said unsurprisingly less diplomatic. Responding to Elon Musk’s follow-up that his proposals would very likely end up resulting in a peace deal as well, Melnyk explained that the only result was that no Ukrainian would ever buy a Tesla again.
