In times of fake news and disinformation, it’s all the more important to research everything properly. From harmful radiation to overheating, iPhoned take a look at it!

The first in the series of modern technological myths is about your phone and your sleep (rhythm). Is Turning Off Your iPhone at Night Better?

Why would you turn off your iPhone at night?

There are two reasons mentioned on the internet to turn off your iPhone at night: it would be better for your battery and the radiation (in the form of bluetooth, internet and wifi) from your iPhone would not be good for your health.

‘Radiations from your iPhone are bad for your health’

Let’s start with the last-mentioned reason to turn off your iPhone at night: radiation. For years there has been a lot of work to be done about the radiation from mobile phones. There are plenty of health blogs that (without citing the source) tell you not to put your phone next to your bed when going to sleep. This would lead to the development of cancer and reduced fertility.

However, the WHO (World Health Organisation) draws different conclusions from a load of studies. In the short term, this official global health organization dares to say that the effects of radiation on brain activity, your sleep, your heart rate and your blood pressure are insignificant. They therefore do not impose any limits or rules on telephone manufacturers regarding the emission of radiation.

On the other hand, WHO also indicates that the long-term study will only run for 15 years. This is simply because we no longer have smartphones. However, in these one and a half decades, not a single study has yet shown that telephone radiation causes cancer or infertility. However, researchers are keeping an eye on these long-term effects. However, most studies are reassuring.

To illustrate: your nightlight also emits radiation. We call this ‘light’ in the vernacular. Why would telephone radiation, in principle also consisting of physical waves, be harmful?

‘Turning off your iPhone is better for the battery’

Yes, technically turning your iPhone off at night is better for your battery. However, we are not talking about the condition of your battery. Rather, we talk about the battery percentage. If you turn off your phone at night, it will not consume any power.

It also doesn’t hurt to reboot the phone every now and then. You do this especially for buggy turn off software and apps. However, to maintain the health of your battery, you do not need to use your iPhone reboot.

In short: there is no need to turn off your iPhone at night because of your battery or ‘dangerous’ radiation. You may want to do it for other reasons, such as the quality of your sleep. Then read on quickly!

In particular, would you turn off your iPhone at night to improve your sleep? Apple has other tricks for that. For example, Night Shift is a function that reduces the amount of blue light in the screen. Blue light keeps you awake. That’s because a lot of blue light naturally reaches your eyes during the day.

When the sun has set, your screen (with blue light) simulates a kind of daylight. At least that’s what your eyes and your brain think it sees. Night Shift filters these colors. In addition, warmer colors are more pleasant to look at in the dark.
