Reduce stress with your iPhone

Do you find yourself experiencing a lot of stress? Often messages and other notifications from your iPhone only increase your stress. In that case, your iPhone offers a number of useful functions that can reduce your stress. That’s why we put together five tips with which your iPhone can reduce your stress.

1. Use Focus on your iPhone for less stress

In iOS 15, Apple introduced Focus, an extension of the Do Not Disturb feature. With Focus you set which apps and people are allowed to disturb you and when this happens. If you are at work, for example, you will only receive work-related notifications. At home you make sure you don’t get these notifications – and your friends, social media channels and game apps are allowed to disturb you.

By default, Focus has four options: Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Personal, and Work. It is also possible to create a new Focus. You do this by tapping on ‘Settings > Focus’ and then choosing the plus sign. Read here how to set up ‘Personal’, so that all work-related notifications remain hidden on your iPhone during your vacation and no longer cause stress.

2. Listen to soft background noises

You can also reduce stress by listening to soft background sounds on your iPhone. This feature is well hidden in iOS, so you may not be familiar with the option yet. By switching on background sounds, other ambient sounds are less distracting and you can concentrate better. You can find this option as follows:

  1. Go to your iPhone’s settings;
  2. Open ‘Accessibility’;
  3. Tap on ‘Audio & Visual > Background Sounds’;
  4. Turn on the switch behind ‘Background sounds’;
  5. Under Sound, choose the sound you want to hear.

You can choose from six different background sounds on your iPhone, including running water, rain, ocean and different types of noise. Once you have set the function, the background sound will be played softly. With the quiet sounds, Apple tries to use your iPhone to reduce your stress and to be able to focus better.

3. Use the new Diary app

Apple will release iOS 17 this year and a completely new app will come to your iPhone. This new app functions as a kind of diary, in which various data can be recorded. This makes it possible to make your own notes in the app, to look back on your day every day and to keep an agenda.

With the Diary app it is therefore possible to take a moment every day to reflect on what you have experienced and to describe your emotions. By keeping track of this regularly on your iPhone, you can see more quickly at which times you experience stress and what the cause is. With the help of artificial intelligence, the iPhone app also gives you tips that you can use to reduce stress, for example. Diary will appear on your iPhone this fall.

4. View the air quality on your iPhone

The air quality in your area has a major impact on your health and can cause more stress. Apple’s Weather app shows you how good the air quality is in your area. You can then see the scale of the air quality index and how it affects your health. For example, it is wise to sit indoors when there is a lot of air pollution and to limit effort.

Do you want to gain more insight into the air quality indoors? Then the second generation HomePod or the HomePod mini is a useful addition to your home. The HomePod (mini) measures the temperature and humidity indoors. You can then view this data with your iPhone. Don’t have a HomePod (mini) yet? 5. Set your screen time

If you’re under too much stress, it’s wise to check how much time you spend on your iPhone. You can see this in the screen time of your phone. To view your screen time, go to ‘Settings > Screen time > View all activity’ on your iPhone. Here you can see which apps you use the most and how much time you spend on those apps. Also interesting: with screen time you can see how many notifications you receive per day.

If you have a very high screen time, it is smart to put your iPhone away more often. Do you find that difficult? The iOS Screen Time feature also lets you set limits for specific apps or all apps at once. Once you reach the limit, you can no longer open the app. A handy way to spend less time on your iPhone, which will probably also reduce your stress.
