Too expensive, too ugly… Why don’t you like “gaming” smartphones?

There are several reasons for this. First of all, gaming smartphones are often very expensive. Indeed, they integrate high-end components that allow them to offer an optimal gaming experience: screen with a high refresh rate in display and in terms of touch response time, more WiFi antennas to avoid lags, cooling system, high capacity battery for long gaming sessions, fast charging to get back into battle right away, and that’s not counting the Premium SoC and the amount of fast RAM that goes with it.

Black Shark is a company majority-owned by Xiaomi and which specializes in smartphones for gamers. It is the only one of its kind on the European market…

Cultural differences…

However, French gamers are often reluctant to spend so much money on a smartphone. Also, there are more Asian gaming smartphones in the Asian market and this competition tends to drive down the prices. In France, apart from Asus with its ROG Phone or Black Shark, the models are not legion. In Asia, on the other hand, there are also Vivo, Realme, Infinix, Lenovo, Nubia… In addition, Asian gaming smartphones are generally better suited to mobile games. Indeed, mobile game publishers often tend to favor Asian platforms, especially when it comes to the launch of new titles. Finally, we must also mention the fact that French gamers are less numerous than their Asian counterparts.

Indeed, the culture of competitive gaming is much more rooted in Asia than in France and Asian gamers often have a much higher level of play. There is also aesthetics: even if some brands like Asus try to play the mat with as few distinctive marks as possible (fluorescent LEDs, colorful logo, etc.), an adult gamer will have a little trouble assuming a phone oriented “game” at work, in a meeting or during a romantic date as much as to play, a OnePlus or a high-end Samsung are more than powerful enough.

The Taiwanese brand Asus offers a ZenFone for the general public and a “ROG Phone” for gamers every year. Its ROG Phone 5 is still the benchmark in 2022… Of course, you don’t have to turn it into a windsurfer…

The lines are starting to move…

Thus, it is clear that gaming smartphones still have a long way to go before conquering the French market. However, do not despair, because things could well change in the years to come. Indeed, the prices of gaming smartphones are tending to fall and mobile game publishers are gradually starting to take an interest in the French market. There are therefore good reasons to hope that gaming smartphones will eventually break through in France, especially since “low cost” manufacturers are also interested in them. This is the case of POCO, which this year released a model for gamers with retractable triggers. The bet is risky, but with a prize of “only” €520, this POCO F4 GT has something to seduce with its 120 W charge, its 120 Hz AMOLED screen and its high-end Qualcomm SoC…

On the edge of the POCO F4 GT we will find retractable triggers specially designed for the game.
