TikTok is the first non-Facebook app with 3 billion downloads
TikTok has been downloaded 3 billion times worldwide from the Google Play Store and the App Store. This makes the app with its short films one of a select list of apps that have been downloaded so often by users. So far, only apps from Facebook have succeeded.
TikTok Success
TikTok is the fifth app worldwide that has managed to reach the gigantic number of 3 billion downloads. That information comes from SensorTower, a market analysis company that analyzes information about the Play Store and App Store. It is striking that in addition to TikTok, only apps from Facebook have achieved so many downloads. These are WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook and Instagram.
SensorTower only looked at data from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and did not count data from other app stores. In addition, the analysts also did not look at the number of times the app was pre-installed on phones.
2.5 billion profit
TikTok achieved the most number of new installs in the first quarter of 2020, as the app was installed 318 million times. The Chinese video app has also managed to turn over $2.5 billion in sales since January 2014, or 2.1 billion euros. That’s a big amount when you know that only 16 apps – games not included – managed to make over a billion dollars in sales.
For TikTok, a path to even more success seems to be ready, because despite the mistrust, the United States has already given up a possible ban from the platform. However, TikTok will have to compete with other well-known platforms that have adopted its concept of short films. YouTube Shorts, for example, has been available in the Netherlands since this week. Another potential pitfall is the app’s worrying privacy policies for which the platform could face growing criticism.
