this way your child sleeps better during a heat wave

Tropical temperatures are heading our way. Yes, that is quite nice when you lie on an air mattress in the water, but less pleasant in a sweltering bedroom. Still sleeping well during a heat wave? That’s how you handle it.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures can reach – don’t be alarmed – 36 degrees or higher. During the day you can of course cool off by taking a dip in a lake or with another refreshing water outing. At night the heat is less pleasant, when you are sweating and puffing in bed.

The golden tips from child sleep coach Susanne Willekes and tutoring provider GoStudent, to help your child sleep well during a heat wave, are therefore just right. And you also benefit from it. Do they come:

  • Open door, but still good to mention: leave windows and doors closed as much as possible during the day. Open them against each other in the evening, so that everything can air well. Even better: turn on the air conditioning a few hours before bedtime. You can also ‘tinker’ with it yourself with a fan.
  • Before going to bed, put your children in a lukewarm shower. This not only causes their body temperature to drop, but also stimulates the production of melatonin, which helps them fall asleep faster.
  • A wet washcloth on your child’s forehead provides the necessary cooling.
  • Make sure your child drinks enough water during the day, especially on hot days. Does your child not like water? Then this is a good alternative.
  • Sounds crazy, but give them an ice cube to suck on. And get one yourself.
  • With temperatures above 30 degrees, pajamas are way too warm. Let your baby or toddler sleep in a romper with diaper or in a thin sleeping bag. For older children, only underwear is sufficient.
  • Are the tips above not working? Then Susanne advises to reassure your child and to explain that sleeping may be a bit more difficult now that it is warm outside. A quick puff and it’s over.
