1. Turn on power saving mode on your iPhone

Perhaps the easiest way in these iPhone tips to save your battery is to turn on power saving mode. This setting temporarily reduces background activity until you can fully charge your iPhone again. These are activities such as retrieving e-mails and downloading photos.

To turn on the energy saving mode, go to ‘Settings’ and choose ‘Battery’. At the top is the bar with ‘Energy saving mode’, where you turn on the function. This is an easy way to make your battery last a little longer!

2. Which iPhone Apps Use a Lot of Battery Percentage?

It is of course also useful to know which apps use a lot of energy and which do not. It may be that an app uses a lot of battery percentage in the background, while you are completely unaware of it.

To get an insight into the battery usage, go to ‘Settings’ and choose ‘Battery’. Here you can see which apps had high battery usage in the last 24 hours or the last four days. If it says “Background activity” under the app, it means that the app has been using a lot of power in the background.

If you see that an app is using a lot of energy in the background without you realizing it, it is good to close apps that you are not using in the future. This is an easy way to make your battery last longer.

3. Screen brightness and automatic lock on your iPhone

In the previous tip in these iPhone tips, did you see the “Home/lock screen” in the list of high battery usage? Then it is smart to turn on ‘Automatic lock’. With this feature, your screen turns off automatically after a certain amount of time, so your screen won’t stay on without you doing anything with your phone.

An automatic lock is easy to set up in ‘Settings’ under ‘Screen and brightness’. There you should see the function ‘Automatic lock’, which you can set to your preference. The shortest option is 30 seconds, which is also the best option to save your iPhone battery.

Enable power saver to save battery

The always-on screen on the iPhone 14 is also an important point of attention when it comes to your battery consumption. With this setting, your phone uses about 5 to 7.5 percent extra per day. By switching off this function, you save a few precious percentages per day.

Do you have such an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max? Then we have an extra saving tip in these iPhone tips. Then consider turning off the always-on screen. You do this under ‘Settings > Display and brightness’. Scroll down and turn off the scroll bar under ‘Display’.

Of course it is always smart not to have the brightness of the screen set too high. You can easily adjust the brightness in the ‘Control Center’ of your iPhone. You can also go to ‘Settings > Display & brightness’.

4. The ambient temperature has an effect on the iPhone battery

Another aspect that affects the battery life: the temperature in your environment. You may have noticed that your battery drains extra quickly in the summer, especially if your iPhone has been in the sun. Your phone is less able to withstand very hot temperatures, so make sure your iPhone stays out of direct sunlight.

The same applies to low temperatures, even then your battery life will temporarily deteriorate. The ideal temperature for an iPhone is between zero and thirty degrees. Your iPhone (or iPad or Apple Watch) works best between these temperatures.

5. Stop letting apps refresh in the background

As mentioned in the second tip, apps sometimes perform activities in the background. This often happens without you realizing it. For example, new information is retrieved or an update is performed. In settings you can easily disable apps that are active in the background.

To stop apps from refreshing in the background, go to ‘General’ in settings and choose ‘Background refresh’. In this overview you choose which apps you want to refresh in the background and for which apps you want to disable this.

6. Turn off location services to save battery

We wrote before about turning off location services for privacy, but it’s also a handy way to save energy. An app that continuously tracks your location consumes a lot of battery, especially if it is your exact location.

Do you want to turn off your location for a number of apps? With many apps it is not at all necessary that they know your (exact) location. You can also turn this off in settings. That works like this:

  1. Go to Settings’;
  2. Choose ‘Privacy and security’;
  3. Go to ‘Location Services’;
  4. Tap on an app to see if it has access to your (exact) location;
  5. Disable the (exact) location for the apps where you do not want this.
