Text replacement on your Mac and iPhone
You can save a lot of time by creating text replacements on your iPhone or Mac. This way, all you have to do is type a short word or abbreviation to conjure it up on the screen. This is useful, for example, with an e-mail address, bank account, or social security number.
Set up text substitution on your iPhone
Do you want to be able to type certain words faster on your iPhone or iPad? Then follow the steps below.
- Open the Settings app and go to ‘General’;
- Tap ‘Keyboard’ and then ‘Text Substitution’;
- Tap the plus sign to add an abbreviation.
- Enter the long word or combination of words at ‘Phrase’. At ‘Keyword’ you create an abbreviation. Confirm with ‘Save’.
From now on, if you enter your newly entered keyword, your iPhone will automatically expand it to the long word or combination of words. Do you want to remove a keyword? Swipe left in the list and choose Delete.
Text replacement works not only for text, but also for symbols such as the Apple character (), which cannot simply be typed on an iPhone. Read more about this in our tip on creating symbols and abbreviations.
Set up text replacement on Mac
You can also set up text replacement on the Mac. Good to know: if you set up text replacement on your iPhone, it will automatically sync with your Mac and vice versa. Follow the steps below to set up text replacement on your Mac.
- Open ‘System Preferences’ and go to ‘Keyboard’;
- Click on the ‘Text’ tab;
- The plus sign adds a new keyword, while the minus sign removes an existing shortcut.
Enter the keyword in the left column. To the right of that, type in the complicated word or combination of words. By the way, it can be as long as you want: it can also be several sentences. This is useful, for example, if you regularly type the same tune about exactly what kind of work you do.
