Specifications

All iPhone 13 models are fast, very fast. However, there are some differences in the amount of RAM and the storage variants you can choose from. Of course, the dimensions of the screen also differ.

  • iPhone 13: A15, 4GB RAM, 6.1 inch OLED screen. 128, 256 or 512GB storage.
  • iPhone 13 mini: A15, 4GB RAM, 5.4 inch OLED screen. 128, 256 or 512GB storage.
  • iPhone 13 Pro: A15, 6GB RAM, 6.1 inch OLED screen. 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB storage.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: A15, 6GB RAM, 6.7 inch OLED screen. 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB storage.

As usual, the more expensive iPhones have more RAM than the base models. As a result, they are better at running multiple apps and performing heavy tasks. This time, the Pro variants also have a somewhat more powerful chip with an extra GPU core. Whether you will notice much of this in practice depends on your use. If you regularly edit 4K videos on your iPhone, you might. We think that most people can probably go years ahead with the A15 chip in the normal iPhone 13.

Design and colors

All iPhone 13 models have a slightly smaller notch than before. That is of course a plus, because that way you have more usable screen space. The smartphones are also very similar in many other respects. The Pro variants do have a stainless steel housing, while the loafers have to make do with aluminum. This has the advantage that they are slightly lighter. You choose from these colors:

  • iPhone 13 (mini): Pink, Blue, Midnight (Black), Red, and Starlight (Off White)
  • iPhone 13 Pro (Max): Sierra blue, graphite, silver, gold

Screen

Just like last year, all iPhone 13 models have an OLED display with perfect black levels and great contrast. Yet the differences are greater than with the iPhone 12. The Pros have a 120Hz screen, which refreshes the pixels 120 times per second. This makes your content look much smoother. These screens are also slightly brighter, making them easier to read in direct sunlight.

  • iPhone 13: 6.1 inch OLED screen, resolution: 2532 by 1170 pixels. Brightness: 800nits. 60Hz.
  • iPhone 13 mini: 5.4 inch OLED screen, resolution: 2340 by 1080 pixels. Brightness: 800nits. 60Hz.
  • iPhone 13 Pro: 6.1 inch OLED screen, resolution: 2532 by 1170 pixels. Brightness: 1000nits. 120Hz.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: 6.7 inch OLED screen, resolution: 2778 by 1284 pixels. Brightness: 1000nits. 120Hz.

Battery

Apple promises that the iPhone 13 will last a lot longer than the iPhone 12. With the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro, the difference is about 1.5 hours. Are you buying a ‘regular’ iPhone 13 or the huge iPhone 13 Pro Max? Then you can use them up to 2.5 hours longer than their predecessors. We list the battery life in different scenarios below:

  • iPhone 13: Up to 19 hours of video playback, up to 15 hours of video streaming, up to 75 hours of audio playback.
  • iPhone 13 mini: Up to 17 hours of video playback, up to 13 hours of video streaming, up to 55 hours of audio playback.
  • iPhone 13 Pro: Up to 22 hours of video playback, up to 20 hours of video streaming, up to 75 hours of audio playback.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: Up to 28 hours of video playback, up to 25 hours of video streaming, up to 95 hours of audio playback.
iPhone 13 Pro ProMotion screen

As you can see, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the absolute battery king of the bunch. For intensive users that may be a consideration to go for this model. You can also charge all variants with a maximum of 20 Watts. You have to provide a charger yourself, because Apple unfortunately no longer supplies it.

Cameras

On paper, the camera differences seem simple: the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have a primary camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens on the back. The Pros add a telephoto lens, with which you can zoom in without loss of quality. They also have a LiDAR scanner, so you can focus faster in low light.

But beware: there is a difference in the sensors and therefore the quality of your photos. The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have a larger primary sensor and an ultra-wide-angle lens that lets in much more light. The Pro models are therefore the best choice for the enthusiastic photographer or videographer. Especially because with these devices you can also take photos in ProRaw, so you can edit them better. Later this year you will also be able to film in ProRes, which will provide better video quality.

  • iPhone 13: selfie camera. Dual 12 megapixel camera lens: ultra wide angle and wide angle lens
  • iPhone 13 mini: selfie camera. Dual 12 megapixel camera lens: ultra wide angle and wide angle lens
  • iPhone 13 Pro: selfie camera. Triple 12 megapixel camera lens: ultra wide angle, wide angle, telephoto. LiDAR scanner.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: selfie camera. Triple 12 megapixel camera lens: ultra wide angle, wide angle, telephoto. LiDAR scanner.

Price

Of course, the iPhone 13 Pro models are more expensive than the entry-level ones. Last year they had the advantage that you also got more storage space, but with the iPhone 13 this difference has disappeared. All new iPhones have 128GB of storage as standard. If you need more space, you pay extra for that. We have made an overview for you with the price of all iPhone 13 models in the Netherlands.

  • iPhone 13: from 909 euros
  • iPhone 13 mini: from 809 euros
  • iPhone 13 Pro: from 1159 euros
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: from 1259 euros

Conclusion

Of course we cannot determine for you which iPhone 13 you should buy. That mainly depends on your preferences regarding the screen and the cameras. Your budget is also an important factor. We can make a pass:

  • iPhone 13: Everyone’s friend. For most people, this is probably the best choice. The iPhone 13 has a nice OLED screen, good cameras and is quickly tired of almost every task for the next five years. The size is also just right in our opinion.
  • iPhone 13 mini: Rumored to be the last ‘small’ iPhone Apple will make. Enthusiasts of such a compact device should therefore strike now. For people with large hands, the mini feels very small. In addition, the battery life is less good than with larger iPhones.
  • iPhone 13 Pro: Do you think the quality of your photos and videos is very important? Then the iPhone 13 Pro is the device for you. In addition, the 120Hz screen is very nice. Especially if you have an iPad Pro and are used to such a smooth display. You pay about 250 euros extra for that compared to the regular iPhone 13.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: Can’t the screen be big enough for you? Then you arrive at the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Keep in mind that you have to operate this model with two hands. You do get the best battery life ever in an iPhone in return. So for the true smartphone addict, this is the best choice.
