This way you can rotate photos and videos on your phone

You probably know that feeling. You take a nice photo or video, but it is oriented incorrectly. If you scroll through your gallery, you will see, for example, a nice video that you were filmed incorrectly in portrait mode. We explain how to solve that.

Those who regularly film or take photos with their phone will often have had to deal with images that are incorrectly oriented. Especially with videos, that mistake is easily made when you start filming while standing and immediately afterwards tilt your phone.

In the past, in the case of photos, you also had to install an editing app like Snapseed if you wanted to rotate images, but today you can do that from the Google Photos editor. Last year, Google Photos got a new photo editor that includes a lot more features.

In the steps below, we’ll explain how to rotate photos and videos from Google’s gallery app preinstalled on Android phones. Regardless of whether the manufacturer of your smartphone provides its own gallery app on the devices.

Rotate a photo

• Open Google Photos and press the photo in question
• Tap the edit icon at the bottom, or start the second from the left
• Tap ‘Crop’ at the bottom
• Then tap the icon with the rotating arrow, the middle one at the bottom
• Keep tapping until the orientation is correct
• Tap ‘Save’ at the bottom right
• Choose ‘Save’ again
• If necessary, press ‘Allow’

Rotate a video

• Open Google Photos and press the video in question
• Tap the edit icon at the bottom, or the middle one
• Then tap the icon with the rotating arrow at the bottom right
• Keep tapping until the orientation is correct
• At the top right, tap ‘Save a copy’.

You have now made a copy, which means that the original video with the wrong orientation is still on your phone. You can delete that video afterwards in Google Photos.
