WhatsApp has a handy tool to delete photos, videos and GIFs shared in chats in one go. This has made freeing up space on the phone a lot easier. In this article you will find out where to find this tool and how it works.

Easier to delete large files in WhatsApp

WhatsApp quickly takes up a significant portion of your storage if you exchange a lot of photos, gifs, and videos with friends and family. You can delete these files, but only all at once. Fortunately, in WhatsApp it is possible to choose which files are deleted and that can be done via a special section in the settings.

How to delete files in WhatsApp chats

With the new tool you can decide for yourself which information you want to keep on your phone and which files you want to delete. To do this, first open the section Manage Storage in the settings.

1. Go to the three dots at the top right of WhatsApp
2. Tap ‘Settings’
3. Tap on ‘Storage and data usage’
4. Tap “Manage Storage”

You will now be taken to a screen where you can see how much space WhatsApp takes up on your phone and what the largest files are. There are two sections, one containing all files larger than 5MB (including the total amount of storage those files take up together) and one containing frequently forwarded photos and videos. You can sort by newest, oldest or largest.

Below you can see which media has been exchanged per conversation. All files are lumped together here, but you can sort them by newest, oldest or largest. You can choose to select everything and delete it all at once, or discard individual items. The choice is yours. In addition, you can see per conversation how much storage all files take up together.

There are also some options that are missing. Unfortunately, you can no longer see per conversation how much storage the sent photos, gifs and other file types take up. You can no longer choose to only delete the gifs.
