This tool tracks down the biggest climate sinners in your area

A team led by the climate protection organization Climate Trace and former US Vice President Al Gore has developed a tool that you can use to track down the biggest climate sinners in your area.

Valid information is required in the fight against climate change. Because we can only reduce CO2 emissions if we know the biggest emitters. A tool from the environmental organization Climate Trace and former US Vice President Al Gore could now help.

The so-called climate tracker is instantaneous through an official website visible and identifies the biggest climate sinners on our planet. An interactive map shows the areas with the highest emissions of CO2, methane or other harmful greenhouse gases. Meanwhile, the goal is clear: the developers want to put pressure on the oil and gas companies.

Al Gore’s climate tracker detects climate sinners

The interactive map highlights the areas around factories, power plants and oil fields in colored areas. To ensure that the data is as accurate as possible, the climate tracker uses thousands of data points from hundreds of satellites and sensors. An artificial intelligence then evaluates them and displays the results on the map.

Filtering the results shows that the Neurath power plant is considered the largest CO₂ emitter in this country. Details can be determined through additional settings, for example by industry or the type of greenhouse gas. The results are not necessarily surprising, however.

CO2 emissions: oil and gas fields, steel industry and transport

Most emissions come from oil and gas fields. Above all, leaks and other problems play a major role. If you look at the country-specific results, the USA, Russia, Iran and China are ahead. The steel industry and the sometimes heavy traffic in these countries also contribute to this. By 2023, the climate tracker should identify millions of emitters.

But there are also warning voices. Because critics see the project as an attempt to pillory various actors and thus force faster results. Al Gore and the project team, on the other hand, see a way to finally present emissions in a transparent and up-to-date manner.
