Germany is heading for the winter of truth: is there enough gas or is the tap turned off for private households and companies? The Federal Network Agency is preparing for the extreme case and has developed software to prevent the worst consequences of a gas shortage.

All of Germany is looking at the coming winter months with fear. Reduced gas supplies from Russia are fueling concerns about a cold winter. At the center of the crisis: the Federal Network Agency. If the worst comes to the worst, the German authorities decide who gets gas and who gets nothing. New software is intended to make the management of this decision easier.

The Federal Network Agency uses new software to decide who gets how much gas

The “Gas Security Platform”, as it is called, is used when the federal government third and final stage in the national gas emergency plan must activate. This happens when, due to reduced Russian gas supplies, the Gas market in Germany collapses and consumers can no longer be supplied (source: World).

From October 1st they are largest gas consumer in Germany obliged to register there and present current data. These include, for example Costs of an interrupted gas supply, the remaining amount of gas or the social relevance of your own products. Should there be gas rationing, the Federal Network Agency wants to use this data to decide, among other things, which company still receives how much gas. The vulnerability of supply chains is also part of the consideration. This is to prevent rationing from unnecessarily affecting upstream or downstream sectors.

With the gas security platform, the Federal Network Agency wants to minimize the negative effects of gas rationing.
