This scene will make you cry in the remake

The first thing I had to do after The Last of Us prologue was put down the controller and wipe the tears off my face. I was so upset by the death of a character I just met. But there’s a whole different scene that I dread in the remake because it’s even more emotional: the ranch scene where Ellie confronts Joel about his dead daughter. Why exactly the original is so emotional and why it is even more violent in the remake – that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

A commentary by Sanel Rihic.

Joel and Ellie: The ranch scene is on fire

Autumn. Ellie runs away after hearing about Joel’s decision to hand Ellie over to his brother Tommy. Eventually he catches up with her at an abandoned farm and then it happens. One of the most sentimental scenes in a video game, fantastically written and even better acted.

Joel enters the room and tells Ellie to leave. However, she refuses and confronts Joel: “Admit that you wanted to get rid of me all the time!” In the search for excuses, the situation worsens. Ellie tries to make it clear that she cannot get infected and can take care of herself, but Joel insists that she is safer with Tommy. And then the words fall:

“You know, i am not her‘, which Ellie is referring to Joel’s dead daughter Sarah.

“Ellie,” Joel warns, “you’re moving here on damn thin ice!

This is the first time in the game that Joel will face his loss directly. And it’s hard to see how attached he is to the past and how difficult it is for him to talk about it.

Unlike Joel, Ellie uses this moment to open up to him. She explains that she lost people too.

“Everyone I cared about either died or fled – damn everyone but you!

But Joel blocks and makes it clear that they will go their separate ways from here.

On the YouTube channel ChloeLi Can you see the scene again? But be warned: it’s heartbreaking and dramatic now as it was then.

Why this scene from The Last of Us keeps blowing my mind

This scene not only thrives on the well-written dialogue, but also on its actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. Your performance makes the scene an unforgettable experience. Although The Last of Us has many strong moments, it is the words and feelingswhich they transport with their voice, which makes this scene unique for me.

But it is not only what is said, but also the gesture. The scene isn’t very physical, but at the point when Ellie tells Joel that she has no one but him, she pushes him backwards with force. And actually this wasn’t in the script at all, it was purely improvised. But it’s those nuances that I think set this scene apart from others.

In the following YouTube video posted on the channel strategist was released, you can see the real performance of the two actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson.

The remake is getting closer and I’ll be crying snot and water

And that’s exactly the reason why I’m sure that there will be even more emotions in the remake. While no new cutscenes were recorded for the reboot – Naughty Dog stays true to the original in that regard – the developer explained ahead of time that The Last of Us Part 1 has to be updated due to modern technology even more closely to the original performances approaches.

You could already see that in the first trailer. In the video you can see to what extent the remake which depicts facial features and body movements more realistically — and that’s a huge bonus considering the ranch scene.

But feel free to check it out for yourself as a little preparation for what awaits us in the near future.
