The smartphone market has been going very badly for Sony for a long time. The currently published figures show the problem more clearly than ever before. The Japanese group earns money elsewhere.
Sony is selling fewer and fewer smartphones
We have already reported several times that Sony has problems with its Xperia smartphones. There is simply no interest in cell phones. Instead of changing something on the devices and serving the market better, you stick to the proven strategy that has failed and you get the receipt again. In the fourth quarter of 2020, Sony was able to sell just one million Xperia phones. That is another 23 percent less than in the previous year in the same period – reported GSMArena. Although the Xperia 5 II is actually an attractive smartphone, Sony couldn’t manage to convince customers of it.
While you can almost count the Sony phones that were sold in the 4th quarter of 2020 on one hand, the competition is really big. Apple sold over 90 million iPhones in the same period. Samsung came to 73.9 million. Xiaomi is happy about 43.3 million sales and Oppo and Huawei each have over 30 million. Sony is so incredibly far behind the competition that one has to wonder how long Xperia phones will still be around. According to Sony, the division is important to the company. If you look at the sales figures, Sony is hardly of any concern to customers.
Sony’s last glimmer of hope:
Sony lives off the PlayStation
It is quite possible that Sony’s cell phone project is nothing more than a hobby. The big profits are made in the company with the PlayStation and other entertainment media. The profit could be increased massively, so that even the forecast for this year was raised. It would be nice if Sony understood customer needs for cell phones as well as it did for the PlayStation 5. Then cell phones would sell properly again. At the moment, however, there is no improvement in sight, as Sony is increasingly leaving the professional area that is uninteresting for end customers.
