Colored AirPods
AirPods have always only been released in white, something that has made them very recognizable all along. But there have been complaints for just as long from people who would like colored AirPods that match the color of their iPhone. Until now, Apple didn’t seem to listen to that at all, but that turns out not to be entirely the case.
Photos have appeared of the very first AirPods in pink. Apparently, Apple once planned several colored AirPods, but they never appeared on the market.
Prototype colored AirPods
According to prototype collector Kosutami Apple prototyped AirPods in 2016 in five different colors that would match the colors of the iPhone 7. The version pictured would go with the rose gold iPhone 7. The other four colors were red, black, blonde, and purple. In the end, a purple iPhone 7 did not materialize either.
Only the charging case
Incidentally, it seems that the colors would only be used for the charging case and that the AirPods themselves would still be white. Judging by the photos, the inside of the charging case would also have been plain white.

Apple would not have canceled the colored AirPods until the Design Validation Testing (DVT) or Production Validation Testing (PVT) stage. This suggests that the decision was made relatively late, probably just before launch.
Colored MagSafe charger
Kosutami also recently shared a photo of a MagSafe charger prototype in the Starlight color. However, according to him, Apple has now also abandoned the plan for this version.
