this new feature in iOS 16 can do that

This is arguably one of the coolest new features in the iOS update. In iOS 16 it is very easy to make a photo freestanding on your iPhone. Tells you exactly how you do that iPhoned you!

Read on after the ad.

iOS 16: How to Detach a Photo on iPhone (and iPad)

If you want to make a photo freestanding on your iPhone, that is quite a difficult job. You do have some apps that try to cut the subject from the background, but often the result is very lousy. Especially with complex subjects it is very tricky to take a photo freestanding.

That will soon change, because iOS 16 has a function that allows you to easily cut the subject in a photo from the background. This way, making a photo freestanding on your iPhone (or iPad) really becomes super easy! You can read exactly how to do this step-by-step below.

Detach photo on iPhone in iOS 16

  1. Open the Photos app and choose one of your photos;
  2. Hold your finger on the subject in the photo for a moment and then do this a second time;
  3. Then tap ‘Copy’;
  4. Open another app (for example Notes), and hold your finger briefly on an empty spot;
  5. Then choose ‘Paste’.

It is also possible to detach the photo on your iPhone and drag it from the Photos app to another app. You do this by tapping and dragging the subject of a photo with your finger. Then open a second app with your other fingers (it’s easier to do this with two hands). Then drag the detached photo to the other app on your iPhone.

Not for all iPhones with iOS 16

It is a pity that the function to take a photo freestanding does not work on all iPhones that will receive the update to iOS 16. Your iPhone must have an A12 Bionic chip or newer. So these are the iPhone XS (Max), iPhone XR and iPhone SE (2020) and newer. For the iPad, this is the iPad 2020, iPad Air 2019 and iPad mini 5.
