This mobile hydrogen power plant can be used flexibly

In the coming decades, one chemical compound will become more and more important: hydrogen. Especially on the way to climate neutrality, the material promises a lot, so dirty sectors, such as the steel sector, could meet their energy needs quickly and climate-neutrally. In the automotive industry, too, hydrogen continues to be seen as an alternative to electric drive.

So the demand is there, and the whole thing only becomes problematic when the supply can barely keep up. Because the great advantages of hydrogen can only be exploited if it is produced green (exclusive use of renewable energies), gray hydrogen only shifts the emissions to the country of manufacture.

On the other hand, there is also hydrogen, which is generated in production processes and is not used any further; the gas ends up in waste in the figurative sense. A technical innovation from Seville could change that. Because there is currently a mobile hydrogen power plant in the city, which, thanks to its modularity, can be used comparatively easily worldwide.

Currently stored in a container, the power plant is to be shipped to the Netherlands and set up there next to a chemical park. The hydrogen, which is produced here as a waste product, is then fed into the power plant, which generates electricity for the region. The capital of the autonomous region of Andalusia is thus establishing itself as an important player in the market.

The power plant is only one that is being built under the Grasshopper project. Further models are to be developed here, which can be operated in a modular manner as required. Depending on the capacity utilization of the power grids, other power plants could start working or be shut down again.

Modular power plants also make it possible to use them in remote areas. If these run completely autonomously, they could be used, for example, to connect citizens in regions that are far away from any electricity pylon. Then all that is necessary is a continuous supply of hydrogen, dirty alternatives are definitely a thing of the past for the initiators behind Grasshopper.
