This is why your iPhone is almost never really charged to 100%

Although it is on the screen of your iPhone after 2-3 hours of charging, it is most likely not yet fully charged. We explain what’s going on.

Read on after the ad.

iPhone 100% charged

If you’re a bit neurotic about your battery (and don’t trust optimized charging), you’ll keep an eye on how far your battery is charged. Because in the best case you don’t want to leave it at that 100% for too long – because that’s disastrous for the battery life.

So you stay near your iPhone and wait for the percentage to jump from 99 to 100 percent. Only: at that moment your iPhone is not yet 100% charged. For about the last 100 mAh you have to wait a little longer. That can even take another 30 minutes (or longer!). But why does Apple do that? Do not you believe? Try charging your iPhone with your Mac and keep an eye on coconutBattery’s statistics.

Why not fully charge?

The reason why Apple won’t let your iPhone fully charge (or at least isn’t clear about it) is simple. It’s simply not efficient to keep your iPhone’s battery at 100mAh for that long. You may get half an hour more use with it, but that doesn’t outweigh that extra taxing half hour of charging.

So your iPhone shows that 100% much earlier, even if that is not entirely correct. Is that bad? Not at all, rather a smart trick to extend the life of your iPhone, without you noticing. Only in exceptional cases can we imagine that it is useful to fully charge your iPhone. For example on vacation, where every drop of energy counts.

So do you see that your iPhone is 100% charged? In that case, take it off the power and don’t specifically wait an hour longer to make sure ‘it’s really full’. In fact, it would be even better for your battery to get it to around 80 percent of the current. With optimized charging, this usually happens automatically at night, you only have to keep an eye on it during the day. More tips for your battery? Check out the video below.
