An AI does what you ask of it
They spring up like mushrooms: AI techniques with very good creative design skills. We asked a few AIs (Artificial Intelligence) to imagine what an iPhone will look like in the distant future.
You won’t believe what ideas these smart computers came up with. In the picture above, we even had no idea how to use the iPhone. Is it made of wood and therefore durable? Does it still work with a touchscreen? Does it only have voice control?
This first outing did not stop there. On the basis of various images created by the computer, we explain different scenarios about the future of the iPhone!
1. iPhone development stagnates
The image above looks quite similar to the current iPhones you have lying next to you. Will iPhone development then stagnate? If it’s up to these AI results, yes! We see of course the edges become slightly thinner and the colors are slightly brighter, but otherwise it looks like a current iPhone.
In fact, it seems that we are already in this trend. The latest iPhones (actually from the iPhone 11) have only minimal differences. Every year there is a faster processor, an improved camera and a bigger battery that has lasted a whole day for a few years now. All things that no one will notice with the naked eye.
Apple tries to spice up the design with colors and wallpapers, but in reality we never see that really big steps are taken. Is that why the development of the iPhone has come to a standstill? Not if it’s up to the future prospects of the other AI!
2. The iPhone will be (even) thinner in the future
The current course that Apple is taking is that the company is making the iPhone (after the iPhone X) increasingly heavier and thicker. For example, the current iPhone 13 Pro Max is the heaviest phone that Apple has released (240 grams). Where will this trend end?
However, the AI tells us the opposite. This image above shows that the iPhone can become extremely thin. That is not a problem for the increasingly smaller chips. But the phone must also have an (increasingly) larger battery to continue feeding the processing power of the chips. It is also very important for the camera that a future iPhone remains on the thick side. Still, we secretly hope that in the future the iPhone will fit in the wallet like a kind of large, flexible credit card.
3. The iPhone focuses even more on photography
For a good camera in your iPhone, it is important that it gets a lot of space. Lenses must be a certain size and depth to provide long focal lengths and large apertures. This allows you to zoom further and capture a beautiful depth of field (blurred backgrounds). In the image of an AI above, we see one huge lens on the back of the model.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way. There have been rumors for years that the iPhone 14 (or the iPhone 15) will get a periscope lens.
That is the solution for the zoom limitation of iPhones that are too thin. The secret is in the use of a mirror. Because the system is built horizontally into the smartphone via a 90-degree mirror, there is suddenly much more space to work in. An excellent camera and a thin iPhone? It will soon be possible!
4. Holograms: the future of the iPhone?
Okay, one last iPhone from the future. When we look very far into the future of the iPhone with our AI, you naturally think of holograms! By movies like Back To The Future II and Star Wars many iPhone owners already dream of an iPhone with this futuristic technique. For example, famous rapper Tupac has already come to life as a hologram for one last ‘performance’.
So what does an iPhone with this hologram technique look like? The AIs showed us the answer! We received no fewer than four different designs of an iPhone as a hologram.
Before we actually see anything with holograms, we expect Apple to come out with a product that looks (a little bit) like a hologram. According to rumors, the company is fully committed to augmented reality and virtual reality.
This special mixed-reality headset mixes the real world through cameras and screens right before your eyes, with a virtual world. So the headset can also project a hologram iPhone for you.
