‘This is what my life as a mother with ADHD looks like’

Meghan doesn’t look like that bouncing kid at all, but has very different characteristics from ADHD. “I’m always tired, my brain is constantly jumping from thought to thought and I can’t focus on anything.” The consequence? Being overstimulated non-stop. Meghan discovered early on that she has ADHD, which makes everything a little easier. Yet it has a huge impact on her daily life. ‘I always procrastinate. Even on productive days, I only get one or two tasks done.’

Hypersensitive

Dealing with her children is also sometimes difficult. ‘My brain has to be constantly stimulated, so playing the same game over and over is mind-numbing. And once I’m focused, I can completely lose myself in it.’ The most frustrating thing for Meghan is her hypersensitivity to stimuli. Multitasking is therefore impossible. ‘It is simply impossible to cook and answer my children’s questions at the same time.’

Mental health

Before being diagnosed, Meghan kept comparing herself to others. It is still mentally tough to be ‘different’. ‘Sometimes I worry that my ADHD is having a bad influence on my children’s education. I want to be a functioning mother, but also show that I struggle sometimes. That balance is difficult. I don’t want my kids to think it’s their fault later on.’ To other moms with ADHD, Meghan wants to say, “You’re doing great. It’s okay to ask for help from a babysitter or therapist. Asking for help is not weak, it shows that you are strong.”
