Apple Watch mirroring: control smartwatch on your iPhone

There are a lot of new features coming in iOS 16. The lockscreen gets a new look and it’s even easier to share photos with your friends. iOS 16 also adds a few cool features for people with physical or motor skills.

A striking new feature is ‘Apple Watch Mirroring’. It allows you to control the Apple Watch with iPhone features such as Voice Control and Switch Control. You no longer have to tap the Apple Watch display, but instead use voice commands or head gestures to use the Apple Watch.

This also allows people with disabilities to launch specific Apple Watch apps such as Heart Rate and Saturation. You don’t just need iOS 16 on your iPhone to use this new feature. You also need to install watchOS 9 on your Apple Watch.

Operate Apple Watch on iPhone: this is how you set it up

To control your Apple Watch with your iPhone in iOS 16, you must first turn on the function. You do this in the following way.

  • On your iPhone, go to ‘Settings’;
  • Scroll down and tap ‘Accessibility’;
  • Under “Physical and Motor,” tap “Apple Watch Mirroring” (or “Apple Watch Sync Display”);
  • Turn on the slider at ‘Apple Watch Mirroring’;
  • Your iPhone will automatically connect to your smartwatch and you will see a message about this on your Apple Watch.

You can then control the Apple Watch with your iPhone, as it were. You do this as if you were swiping your finger over the Apple Watch, but then you do it on the screen of your iPhone. The side buttons also work this way and you can tap on the iPhone screen.

When you have connected the Apple Watch to your iPhone, you can now also use the smartwatch with Voice Control (‘Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control’) or Switch Control (‘Settings > Accessibility > Switch Control’). You cannot normally use these functions with your Apple Watch.
