WhatsApp is a handy app, but how annoying is it when the gallery of your smartphone fills with photos of others, which are sent via WhatsApp? You can do something about that!

The gallery of your smartphone is perhaps one large collection of images. From vacations, home-garden and kitchen photos, and of course plenty of pictures of your dog or cat. But perhaps it also consists largely of WhatsApp photos.

Photos of someone’s glass of beer on the terrace, a random photo of what someone is going through, or something completely different. Maybe you don’t want these in your gallery at all. You may not be waiting for that at all. Fortunately, you can prevent photos, videos and other media files from WhatsApp from ending up in your gallery. DroidApp explains how.

Adjust for all conversations at once

If you do not want any WhatsApp file to be shown in your gallery, you can easily set this up.

Open WhatsApp on your smartphone
Tap the three dots at the top of the screen
Select ‘Settings’
Go to ‘Chat’
Go to ‘Media Visibility’ and toggle the switch to the left (gray) if you don’t want media files to be shown in the gallery app. It defaults to green. If it is green, the files are shown in the gallery.

Customize for one call

It is also possible to indicate per conversation whether or not media files should be shown in the gallery. So you don’t have to miss any important conversations in your gallery. The setting is done as follows;

Open WhatsApp and select a conversation that you don’t want files to show in the gallery.
Tap the name of the contact or group at the top of the screen.
At the bottom of the screen you will find the option ‘Media visibility’.
You can set this to ‘No’, after which the images from the group will not appear in the gallery.
