these widgets are placed on your lock screen in iOS 16

The home screen of your iPhone undergoes a major metamorphosis in iOS 16. Part of that: widgets that appear directly on your lock screen in iOS 16. That’s what it looks like.

Read on after the ad.

Lockscreen widgets have been the preserve of Android phone users for years. Now with iOS 16, that is finally coming to an end. The lock screen (also known as the lock screen, or officially ‘Entry screen’) is getting a major makeover. You can use super cool wallpapers, customize the font of the clock and thus add widgets. We give you a short tour of all the widgets that are possible. You can adjust the widgets via ‘Settings>Wallpaper and lock screens’.

The first position for a widget on the lockscreen is above the clock. You can choose between different options for this, but it is always only one value. Think of a date, a second clock (for a different time zone) or a Reminder.

  • Agenda: day of the week, date, month OR your next appointment.
  • Clock: time from another time zone OR your next alarm clock.
  • Condition: activity statistics.
  • Reminders: Your next reminder.
  • Stocks: a stock with an up or down arrow
  • Weather: moon phase, sunrise and sunset, temperature, location, rain, air quality, UV index, wind.

Directly below the clock you have a frame where you can place larger widgets. That can be up to four square widgets, two larger, elongated widgets, or a combination of the two. Below we list all widgets.

Battery

There are two versions of the battery widget, one square and one elongated. Both show the battery status. Once AirPods are connected, their battery will be displayed.

agenda

The calendar widget comes in three versions. Two are square: the current date or the time of the next appointment (the former is a bit double, because the date is always shown above the time). Alternatively, choose a larger widget to show both the event name and the time.

Clock

Three clock widgets allow you to view a clock for a particular time zone. These are available in an elongated and two square variants. There is also a world clock to see the time in up to three cities around the world, and two versions that show the next alarm.

Condition

The fitness widget in the small version shows your Activity rings, the larger one shows those stats as text.

Home

For the Home app, two widgets show any sensors in the house, one shows any lights and switches, and another notifies you of any security issues. You can also view a specific security accessory, or view an overview (consisting of security, climate, and lighting).

News

A single elongated widget shows the most important news story of the day.

Memories

An elongated widget provides quick access to one of your reminder lists, and shows subsequent reminders there.

Shares

With a smaller and a larger widget, you can view stocks and track their price throughout the day. There is also a larger widget that instantly displays three stocks.

Weather

Finally, there are eight weather widgets to view moon phase, sunrise and sunset, temperature, location, rainfall, air quality, UV index and wind. The current weather conditions and moon phase are only in the elongated widget format.

This list of widgets is probably not exhaustive, as Apple may add more before iOS 16 is available for download in the fall. Developers will also be able to create their own widgets using Apple’s new WidgetKit API, so expect many more lock screen widgets to come.
