These futuristic living capsules stand in the middle of the sea
With the so-called Seapods, the Panamanian company Ocean Builders has developed special residential capsules that stand in the middle of the sea. They can accommodate up to two residents. By the summer of 2023, around 100 habitable capsules should be off the coast of Panama.
What will the houses and apartments of the future look like? The climate crisis requires a rethink in this area. There are more than enough alternatives to the classic construction method. For example, houses from the 3D printer are no longer unusual. The company is pursuing off the coast of Panama Ocean Builders meanwhile a new concept.
These are so-called seapods. These are living capsules in the sea, with 77 square meters of space for up to two residents. There are bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom on three levels.
There is also an outdoor terrace. The design is both minimalist and futuristic. Potential buyers can also customize the living quarters according to their taste – and budget.
Residential capsule with individual equipment
For example, there are whirlpools, greenhouses, gardens and climbing walls to choose from. The price range is between 295,000 euros and 1.5 million euros. A special system fills steel tubes with air so that the Seapods don’t sink in heavy waves. As a result, the living capsules float up to three meters above the water level.
Ocean Builders has also developed its own infrastructure for the Seapods. Drones, for example, are supposed to bring food and medicine to the dwellings. Autonomous boats are designed to dispose of garbage and compost. When they’re not in action, they clean up the sea, according to Ocean Builders.
Seapods are designed to be as sustainable as possible
The focus is clearly on sustainability. In order not to disturb sea creatures, cameras monitor the maritime habitat and inform residents of movements around their own four walls. A notification is also sent if a group of dolphins passes by.
The first Seapods are scheduled to accommodate the first overnight guests from December 2022. By the summer of 2023, Ocean Builders intends to build up to 100 units for individual use. This is followed by a second series with up to 1,000 apartments.
