Nothing Boss: Foldable cell phones are all the same

The company’s CEO is currently touring from interview to interview to present the new Nothing Phone (2). He is currently traveling in India, where he found time for the magazine India Today. In conversation, he commented on many topics – including his own clear opinion on foldable smartphones announced. Carl Pei simply cannot get used to this product category.

According to Pei, folding cell phones face a general problem. It is not the customers who want such smartphones. Instead, according to him, it’s the manufacturers who are basically forcing cell phones like this on us: “I don’t think consumers are walking around and saying, ‘Hey, I wish my phone could fold. I think it’s an innovation that manufacturers are pushing on consumers.” India Today on Twitter).

The Nothing boss has also identified another problem. Foldable smartphones would basically all look the same. Customers wouldn’t be able to tell them apart if the manufacturers didn’t have their logo. Pei ignores the fact that there are definitely visible differences – for example between a Google Pixel Fold and a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Pei’s statements should make it clear that Nothing at least in the near future not to be expected with a foldable smartphone. This is exactly what the CEO confirmed in an interview.

But it is also certain that a folding mobile phone from Nothing would definitely stand out from the crowd. A Nothing Fold with clear backing and glyph lighting would certainly convince one or the other customer.
