These cars cause a lot of trouble

The waiting times for new cars are long. A look at the market for used vehicles not only makes sense in terms of price, the quick availability is also a real selling point. But which model should it be? The ADAC breakdown statistics offer help. Buyers should take a closer look at these cars.

Be careful with used cars: These cars attract negative attention from the ADAC

If you decide to buy a used car after long waiting times for many new cars, whether e-car or combustion engine is hardly important, you should take a look at the ADAC beforehand. In this year’s breakdown statistics, the automobile club lists which models you should take a closer look at:

  • Smart forfour: The model has been discontinued but can still be found on the used market. However, with 30.2 breakdowns per 1,000 registrations in 2015, the small car is not convincing. The following years are also hardly to be recommended.
  • Hyundai i20: With the e-car Ioniq 5, Hyundai can convince today. The i20, on the other hand, didn’t always cut a good figure. According to ADAC, however, the frequency of breakdowns has decreased significantly since the year of manufacture 2016.
  • Renault Clio: The Frenchman usually achieves a medium rating, but with outliers on the lower side. The years of construction 2014 and 2015 attracted particularly negative attention.
  • Toyota C-HR: The statistics gives the still young model a stale aftertaste right from the start. From 2017 to 2019 he couldn’t fight his way out of the red zone at ADAC and has only been on the market since 2016.
  • Toyota Corolla: Particularly bitter in times of advancing electrification: The Toyota Corolla Hybrid cannot convince in the latest version. 9.6 breakdowns on 1,000 registrations are enough for the Japanese to issue a warning.
  • Ford S Max: The middle-class van is unstable in the breakdown statistics of the ADAC. In the years of construction from 2016 to 2018, however, the incidents are increasing.
  • Opel Insignia: It is particularly bitter for a manufacturer’s flagship, but Opel’s Insignia is not convincing in the ADAC comparison. In 2016, the breakdown frequency rose particularly high with 36.0 per 1,000 registrations. It is also not recommended to strike carelessly with other years of construction.
  • Volkswagen Sharan: The Sharan has blossomed. The latest models are faring much better, but before 2015 things are looking bleak. If you strike anyway, better take a closer look.

Only models aged between 3 and 10 years (first registration between 2012 and 2019) were included in the evaluation sold at least 10,000 copies in one of those years and were approved (source: ADAC).

ADAC: All-round check is mandatory when buying a used vehicle

The details of the automobile club are as Guide for used car buyers thought. For example, it can make sense not to buy a specific model from the year of manufacture for which the breakdown helpers have to be called out particularly frequently.

However, the ADAC points out that the breakdown statistics ultimately no statement about individual cars meets. A model that has attracted negative attention can also be flawless – or one with positive ADAC statistics can give up the ghost tomorrow. The ADAC therefore recommends having a professional used car checked before you buy it.
