If you have an iPad and an iPhone, you know that both devices work pretty much the same. Yet there is quite a difference in the software of the iPad and the iPhone. iPhoned show you the differences in this iPadOS vs iOS article and we’ll also tell you about the extra features.

iPadOS vs iOS: The Biggest Differences

If you look at an iPhone and an iPad side by side, you will immediately notice that the tablet is a lot bigger. But if you are going to use the tablet or iPhone, there is not much difference in terms of software.

However, there are a few things that immediately stand out when you put both devices next to each other. There’s more space for apps in the Dock (the apps bar at the bottom of the screen), and the Home screen on the iPad also appears horizontally when you rotate the tablet. But otherwise, iPadOS and iOS are quite similar. That is secretly also nice, because then you can immediately get started with an iPad if you already have an iPhone.

Yet there are also differences in the software, which are often very useful. iPhoned shows you the main differences between iPadOS and iOS.

1. Multitask on iPad with Split View and Slide Over

Your iPad with iPadOS has a very important feature that your iPhone with iOS does not. These are the Split View and Slide Over features, which will come in handy if you use many apps at once. We explain them briefly.

Split View: Open two apps at once

With Split View you place two apps next to each other. For example, you can have a website open and also keep an eye on your Facebook updates. The iPhone’s screen would be really too small for this.

To use the feature, first open Safari. Then surf to the website you want to view. Then open the Dock by slowly swiping up at the bottom of the screen. Choose the app in the Dock you want to open with it and drag it to the edge of the screen. Release the app and both apps will appear side by side.

Oh yeah! Not unimportant: to close Split View, drag the line between the open apps all the way to the left or right.

Slide Over: extra window for a second app

A feature similar to Split View is Slide Over. This superimposes one app on top of another app. For example, you can read Twitter while you have the YouTube app open in a small window.

Open the app you want to use full screen (for example, Twitter). Swipe up slightly at the bottom of the screen to open the Dock. Tap the app you want to open next to it and swipe it on the app that’s already open. Release the app and it will now float over the first app.

To close the Slide Over window, hold your finger on the multitasking button (the three dots) and swipe the app to the left or right of the screen. Sometimes you need to swipe the app again in the Split View after that.

2. iPadOS vs iOS: Universal controls only on iPad

The Universal Control (or Universal Control) feature appeared in iPadOS 15.4 and MacOS Monterey 12.3. It lets you control both your Mac and iPad with a single mouse, trackpad, and keyboard. 3. Apple Pencil: Only on iPad

Another big difference between the iPad and iPhone is the use of the Apple Pencil. This does not work on an iPhone. So if you want to start drawing, it’s better to ignore the iPhone and grab an iPad.

There are two versions of the Apple Pencil that you use in the same way. The only difference is how to charge them. You charge the first Apple Pencil via the charging port of your iPad.

You charge the second-generation Apple Pencil by magnetically clicking it onto the side of the tablet. Note that you can’t just use any Apple Pencil on any iPad. Below you can see which Apple Pencil you should have for your tablet.

iPadOS vs iOS: even more minor differences

There are, of course, many more minor differences between the iPad and iPhone. For example, you can store more apps in the Dock on the iPad and the most recent apps will also be on the right side. Handy, right? But there are also things that the iPad doesn’t have (and the iPhone does). For example, did you know that the iPad doesn’t have a built-in calculator app?
