In many cases, your own CV represents a particularly polished version of your own career. But many people obviously don’t take the truth so seriously here.

Like a poll of Resume platform CVapp.de shows, almost 60 percent of Germans admit to having lied once in their CV.

These are the most common lies on a resume

For the survey, CVapp.de asked 3,000 applicants about their relationship to the truth in their CVs. It came out that around 58.5 percent of those surveyed had already stated the untruth in a CV have.

According to the survey, men in particular like to use this beautification tactic when it comes to CVs. Because with them the percentage is even over 70 percent, women only come up to just under 46 percent.

But what is it that applicants particularly often brighten up in their CVs? Educational qualifications are in fifth place. Almost 52 percent of those surveyed stated that they had already stated an untruth in their CV.

Personal interests follow in fourth place with around 56 percent. Third place is taken by lies about job titles with around 58 percent.

The most common lie is about skills and competencies. Here, more than 78 percent of respondents do not take the truth so seriously. Closely followed in second place by the previous salary with almost 74 percent.

Men and women lie so differently

While men are at the forefront of resume untruths in most categories, there are also categories where women are at the top.

For example, when stating your age. A total of around 13 percent of those surveyed said they were fibs when it came to age. This category occupies eighth and penultimate place in the ranking. But for women, the number is around 15.7 percent, while for men it is only around 11.5 percent.

And when it comes to references too – with a total of 49 percent in seventh place – women are ahead. Because for them it is almost 56 percent, for men just under 45 percent. In all other categories, however, men lead the ranking in some cases clearly.
