These are the 10 dirtiest cities in Germany

Dirty cities are not necessarily due to a lot of garbage. A high proportion of fine dust in the air can also make a city dirty and is hardly visible to the naked eye. In our weekly ranking, we therefore show you the ten German cities with the highest air pollution.

A high air pollution not only has a negative impact on flora and fauna, but also on human health, water bodies and soil quality. In worldwide comparison Meanwhile, among global capitals, Delhi, India, had the highest levels of particulate matter pollution in 2021.

Air pollution: These 10 German cities are the dirtiest

The Swiss company for air quality technology IQAir has determined the German cities with the highest air pollution using historical data from 2017 to 2021. The value of fine dust is based on the unit μg/m³ (micrometers per cubic meter) within a year.

10th place: Krefeld

Krefeld is in tenth place in the ranking. In 2021, the level of air pollution there was at 12.9 µg/m3. The city on the Lower Rhine is home to more than 220,000 people.
