Release iOS 16.4
After a number of test versions, the time has finally come: Apple has officially released iOS 16.4. While iOS 16.3 was mainly a security update, iOS 16.4 does bring a number of cool new features to your iPhone. Are you curious which functions these are? iPhoned list the most important new features for you.
Safari gets push notifications
In iOS 16.4, a website can finally show notifications on your iPhone. For example, you can set per webpage whether you want to receive notifications from the site. If you then install the web page as a web app on your iPhone, the web app will function just like a normal app by providing push notifications.
New emojis
It’s been a while since new emojis came to your iPhone, but iOS 16.4 changes that. There will be several new emojis in iOS 16.4, a total of no less than 21. These emojis include a shaking head, a pink heart, a donkey, a goose and many more. See all the new emojis here.
New calling function for your iPhone
In iOS 16.4, calling via the internet also gets a new function. With this new calling feature, also known as ‘Voice Isolation’ or ‘Voice Isolation‘, background noise is filtered out during a phone call. For example, your voice can be heard more clearly during a telephone conversation and annoying noises in the background are less disturbingly audible. Handy in a busy street for example!
HomeKit is getting an update
iOS 16.4 brings back the Homekit update that was removed in iOS 16.2 due to issues. With the update, the app gets a new architecture, which mainly greatly improves the reliability and performance of the app. The update is intended to improve communication between the various HomeKit devices.
Podcast app is a bit better again
The Podcast app has also received several new functions in iOS 16.4. For example, there is now a ‘Channels’ option in the Library, with which a podcast creator can place all his podcasts of a certain category in one clear list. In addition, it is now easier to resume a podcast if you have connected your iPhone to CarPlay.
Always on in iOS 16.4 added to battery overview
In the new iOS update, the consumption of the always on screen is added to the battery overview of your iPhone. This battery overview can be found under ‘Settings>Battery’, where you can see exactly what percentage each app uses of your battery. In iOS 16.4, the always on screen can therefore be found here.
Fixed crash detection issues in iOS 16.4
In recent months, a relatively large number of reports have been received of crash detection that went off incorrectly. Apple has announced that crash detection has been re-optimized in iOS 16.4. Crash detection has also been improved in iOS 16.1.2 and iOS 16.3.1. The problems were not fully resolved at the time, so Apple is now forced to re-optimize crash detection.
More new features in iOS 16.4
In iOS 16.4, a number of other minor changes have been made. For example, the Apple Music app has been updated: your profile can now be opened from more tabs. In addition, Messages has received previews for links to Mastodon and the Assignments app has new functions. These are other minor updates in iOS 16.4:
- Books with animation effect. The page turn effect returns to Apple’s Books app.
- Duplicate items in Photos. The Duplicate Items feature is being expanded to also detect duplicate photos and videos in a shared iCloud Photo Library.
- Better overview of AppleCare. From the new iOS version, you will see a comprehensive overview of all insurance policies you have taken out with Apple.
- VoiceOver support for maps in the Weather app.
- Video accessibility settingwhich automatically dims a video when flashes of light are detected.
- “Ask to Buy” requests. iOS 16.4 fixes a bug where “Ask to Buy” requests from children don’t appear on the parent’s device.

- Communication security has been added. Parents can receive a warning if their children send or receive photos that contain nudity.
