Read on after the ad.

Photoshop on iPhone: the best apps

You no longer need a laptop to edit photos. With your iPhone or iPad you can also come a long way and you can even photoshop quite well. From movie posters to the most beautiful Instagram creations; in combination with the right tools you can create it all. We have listed 4 handy apps for ‘phone-to-shopping’ for you.

1. Adobe Creative Cloud: complete package

Adobe is known for its comprehensive suite of creative programs. All these programs together form the ‘Creative Cloud’. The California company recently released an iOS app under the same name. The basic functions of Photoshop and Indesign can be applied here for free. This includes cropping photos, color correction and text editing. However, you can do a lot more with the app.

The Adobe Creative Cloud app brings together all the work you do in multiple apps. Think of apps like:

And the best-known photoshop app (provided you use an iPad and have a paid Adobe account)? That’s Photoshop, of course. All these apps are free to download. In the Creative Cloud app you will find all your work files and fonts from the different apps. You also have an overview of the available cloud storage space.

A disadvantage of a free Adobe account is that you only have 2GB of storage space to work with. This space fills up very quickly, especially if you work a lot with high-resolution files. 20GB of extra memory costs 2 euros per month and that is manageable. However, it is not possible to use the extended desktop versions of the Creative Cloud suite with a free Adobe account. For the truly professional work you therefore soon have to dig a little deeper into your pouch.

2. Affinity Photo: Lots of options for go-getters

Affinity Photo is only downloadable for the iPad, so you can’t photoshop with it on your iPhone. That’s a shame, because the app is very extensive and in terms of functionality it is not inferior to the desktop version of Adobe Photoshop. But if you have an iPad, this is one of the best Photoshop alternatives.

The big advantage of Affinity Photo is its relatively low price. Where an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription costs at least 600 euros on an annual basis, you pay 10 euros once for the iPad version Affinity Photo. There is also a version for the Mac. This costs 50 euros once and has even more features.

The extensive feature package of Affinity Photo ensures that the app is not easy to use. You have to be quite active and motivated to master the program. There are dozens of buttons, all of which do slightly different things. It is therefore more an app for the pros and serious hobbyists. For a quick Instagram edit, it might be better to use a different app.

3. LightX: Free version is limited

LightX is a free app for iPhone and iPad. You can easily remove backgrounds and add color and lighting effects with the app. You can also make collages, stick stickers on photos and work with text. The free version of LightX offers a wide range of different features.

For the real fans there is a paid version of LightX. This costs at its cheapest about 22 euros per year. This unlocks a number of important functions if you want to develop your photoshop skills a bit more seriously.

We are somewhat disappointed that the free version of LightX does not allow you to save files in high resolution. The ‘low’ resolution works fine for many purposes, but if you want to print your photo in large format, then it stops. Do you really want to photoshop professionally with your iPhone? Then LightX is only interesting if you pay for it.

4. Photoleap: easy to use

Photoleap is a simplified photo editing app. This app doesn’t have a months-long learning curve, but you do lose functionality because of this. Freeing photos is still possible and because of different blend modes you can easily turn multiple photos into a surreal work of art.

Unfortunately, not all features are available for free. For example, you can only work with three layers and you have to take out a paid subscription for a number of extra functions. Many apps nowadays opt for a subscription form instead of a one-time payment. That’s a shame, because you don’t always need a subscription.
