The telegram is not safe, says Signal’s founder
The Telegram chat application is rapidly gaining in popularity and no wonder – many see it as a safer alternative to WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. There is also the lesser-known Signal application, which also promises users advanced message protection through end-to-end encryption.
It was its founder, Moxie Marlinspike, who decided to publicly criticize a competitor, saying that the Telegram was not nearly as safe as it seemed to be. The Phone Arena portal addressed the topic.
Even WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger offer better protection than Telegram
According to him, text messages, pictures, videos or contact names stored on Telegram’s servers are not encrypted in any way. Instead, they are stored in their original form or in plain text. This means that anyone with access to the servers can easily see the content of users’ messages. At best, it will only be curious employees of the company, at worst, a hacker intending to misuse the stolen data.
He added that even Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, both owned by Meta, offer better protection in this regard. It is known for its indifference to the privacy and privacy of its service users, but at least it encrypts messages with a basic end-to-end protocol before storing them on the server.
At first glance, these claims may look like a cheap marketing move by which Marlinspike wants to make Signal visible and sink its competitor. However, this is not the first time anyone has questioned Telegram’s reputation.
