The state is preparing an application with which you can detect illegal logging
The Ministry of the Environment, together with the Ministry of Defense, plans to make an application available to the public to help detect illegal logging and timber transportation. He informed about the novelty of the Institute of Environmental Policy.
If you come across logging in the forest, just open a new application and it will use GPS technology to verify that the logging near you is legal. You can also check the registration numbers of cars that carry wood or products made of wood. If the application detects any irregularities, it sends them to the competent authorities for inspection.
The feature will be added to an existing application used by the Ministry of Defense to control logging and transportation of timber in military forests. When it is made available to the public, data on other forests will be added.
Illegal logging is a big problem in Slovakia
The application will help the ministry not only to detect illegal mining, but also to reduce the burden associated with reporting complaints to the Slovak Environmental Inspectorate, which must then be verified. According to a contribution from the Institute of Environmental Policy, up to half of environmental crime in Slovakia concerns illegal logging or timber transport, and the police detect 2 to 3 wood thefts a day.
A similar system has proved successful in Bulgaria and Romania
A similar application already exists in Bulgaria and Romania, with a 30% increase in the number of registered official transport documents in Romania over the first three months.
