The Peripheral season 2 started on Amazon Prime
The Peripheral is an exciting science fiction series that revolves around “The Peripheral”, a kind of brain implant that allows you to enter the virtual world. Also in the second season numerous exciting developments.
What exactly is The Peripheral?
The series is loosely based on a well-known SF novel by cyberpunk great William Gibson.
Both that novel and the series are named after The Peripheral. A device that looks a bit like Elon Musk’s Neuralink, crossed with VR glasses. But much more advanced.
This device allows you to immerse yourself in a virtual world and control an avatar, a digital body, that feels like your own body.
But… is it really a virtual world?
How The Peripheral Began
The first season started with the main character Flynne Fisher, very addicted to the virtual world. Flynne is desperately short of money to buy medicine for her ailing mother. In the US, that’s a very realistic plot line. The poor cannot afford expensive health insurance there. In the dystopian future US where the series is set, the poor must fight a life-or-death struggle to survive.
A mysterious company, Milagros Coldiron from Colombia, wants to help her out for a while. That, of course, in return. She has to work for them in the virtual world as a secret agent. And that’s just the beginning, because in reality she’s part of a much bigger plot and the hunt is on for her.
To watch or not to watch?
Do you like hard, exciting science fiction with a reasonably realistic exploration of future technologies such as brain implants and Virtual Reality? Then you will probably find this series completely over. The Peripheral is less suitable for people who would like a detailed psychological elaboration of the relationships between the main characters.
