During WWDC, Apple not only launched new software, but also a brand new MacBook Air with the new M2 chip. However, we were a bit shocked by the price of this MacBook Air 2022. In this article we explain why.

MacBook Air 2022 is an improvement on all fronts
In addition to new popular software (including iOS 16, macOS 13 Ventura and iPadOS 16), Apple also announced new hardware at WWDC: the MacBook Air 2022. We are excited! The MacBook Air 2022 is a better version of Apple’s current most popular laptop on all fronts: the MacBook Air 2020. We see a new flat design and a large screen without the laptop itself growing. Not to forget: the laptop also has the faster M2 chip.
On one level, however, we are hugely disappointed. The MacBook Air 2022 is almost one and a half times as expensive as its predecessor. So much for Apple’s ‘budget laptop’. In this article you can read what you can currently buy better than this new MacBook Air 2022.
MacBook Air has become one and a half times as expensive
Okay, we still have to get our hands on the new MacBook Air 2022, but we are already a bit over the price. The entry-level model starts at 1519 euros. With the M1 model from 2020, that was still 1129 euros. So there is a difference of 390 euros! We can now even say that we see the MacBook Air 2020 on the market for 999 euros.
Of course you pay even more if you need better specs. In 2020 you paid ‘only’ 1629 euros for 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. With upgrades, you can pay much more for the MacBook Air with M2 chip: 2099 euros. Can you still keep up with it? All in all, we find Apple’s range of MacBooks in 2022 a confusing mess.
Which MacBook Air Should I Buy?
Our tip? The M2 chip may be a lot more energy efficient, faster and more powerful than the M1, the difference is not very big! If you really want the MacBook Air with a good webcam (1080p), MagSafe 3 charger, a (slightly) larger and brighter screen, you can certainly wait for the MacBook Air 2022. It will be released next month.
But just want a good laptop in Apple’s ecosystem? Then the MacBook Air 2020 is a very good choice today in terms of price-quality ratio. But be quick, because Apple has also significantly increased the suggested retail price of this model. It could well be that the price in the web stores will rise despite the new model.
In short: the MacBook Air 2022 is going to be a good laptop, but you can’t really call it ‘budget’ anymore. Fortunately, that still applies to the MacBook Air from 2020 with the M1 chip.
