The improved Quake contains a cut-out part of one level -apkrig
The current remaster of the first part of the Quake event from the id Software studio offers not only graphic news, but also content content. A user nicknamed starshipwaters on Twitter he pointed outthat the updated version also has a cut – out part of one of the levels, which was originally shortened due to technical limitations.
This is level E2M6: Dismal Oubliette. John Romero had to trim it to fit on one floppy disk when the game was first coming to market. Years ago, however, he revealed that he probably retained the only one of these remains and released it additionally as E2M10: Lost Entrance of the Dismal Oubliette.
Strictly speaking, this is not a complete novelty, because you could have touched the original version in the past, but it was not part of the original game. And you also had to do something about it. Many players didn’t even know there was another alternative. That’s the magic of the current official version.
Irretrievably lost treasures
This is not the only level that the authors had to shorten. However, Romero did not have the necessary data for their original versions, so they are probably lost forever. Years ago, Romero regretted not making copies of them, because of course he had spent a lot of time with them. And from today’s point of view, it’s really a huge loss that fans would be willing to offset with gold.
But going back to Dismal Oubliette, the inclusion of the complete version in the improved edition only shows how responsibly the authors approached their task without loudly drawing attention to this bonus. It may turn out that there are more similar surprises in the remaster. And if you are not interested in the improved edition, download E2M10: Lost Entrance of the Dismal Oubliette as a separate map.
