The historic Microsoft Edge will disappear
Windows 10 user, you may still be on the original version of Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately for you, Microsoft is going to force your hand. Indeed, the Chromium version of the browser, launched in January 2020, will permanently replace the first version of the browser. The American company confirmed rolling out a cumulative update on April 13, 2021.
Indeed, the Redmond firm has officially announced the end of support for the original version of Microsoft Edge. As of March 9, 2021, browser tracking will be stopped. No more security updates will be offered. In fact, it will be dangerous to continue browsing with this version, now at the mercy of bugs and security vulnerabilities.
This is why and in order to limit the risks incurred by users, Microsoft therefore prefers to definitively draw a line on the first version of Edge. This cumulative update will affect Windows 10 versions 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, and 2004. According to Microsoft, the Chromium version of the browser offers ” built-in security and the best interoperability with the Microsoft security ecosystem, while being more secure than Chrome for business on Windows 10 ″. Note that if you already have the latest version of Microsoft Edge, only the first version stamped Legacy will be removed during the update.

Goodbye EdgeHTML, hello Chromium
As a reminder, Microsoft chose to abandon Edge and the in-house EdgeHTML engine in January 2020 in the face of far too stiff competition. It must be said that the browser began its career with some handicaps, such as the inability to install extensions. Possible thing with Chrome, Firefox or Opera. In fact, Microsoft preferred to opt for the Chromium engine, used in particular on Google Chrome and Opera. Chromium is an open-source web browser that serves as the basis for several browsers.
Its rendering engine, which responds to the name of Blink, makes navigation more stable and fluid. This bet seems to have paid off, since Microsoft recently announced that it had won over 600 million users around the world. It must be said that the switch to Chromium has allowed Microsoft to deploy Edge on a large number of media such as Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
