The German government is allocating 900 million euros for more charging stations

These are serious amounts that the German government has set aside for stimulating electric driving. The 900 million is part of a larger plan worth 6.3 billion euros. This money should significantly increase the infrastructure for electric driving over a period of three years. The German government hopes that citizens will take the step towards electric driving more quickly.

1 million charging stations

That is ultimately the goal, to be achieved before 2030. Last year there were still 70,000, and the counter is now at 90,000. The German government mainly wants to focus on local municipalities that are currently lagging behind. In this way they want to persuade the stiff German motorist to leave the combustion engine for what it is and to embrace the EV.

There are currently 1.2 million fully electrically powered cars on the road in Germany. Those numbers need to go up, the government believes. When the current project is completed in 2030, there should be more than 15 million. The opinion is that the German mainly ignores the EV because of the high price compared to the limited range and charging options. With the current plans, at least the latter should become less prominent. At the same time, this makes the limited range less problematic. The charging stations must reach both households and companies.

Net zero emissions

It should all lead to Germany being completely climate neutral by 2045. It is mainly a means to realize the country’s climate ambitions. However, rising temperatures and variable rainfall are not the only motivation. The energy crisis is also a factor. The war in Ukraine increases the pressure on the fossil fuel industry and shows how dependent Europe is on imports.

The reactions are not yet unequivocally positive. Last year, the VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie) was already positively surprised. Earlier they denounced the apathy of the German government. This would be behind the times. Now the VDA says that an important step has been taken and that it especially hopes that the plans will be implemented quickly. Other voices call the plans mainly symbolic politics and point out that there is a lot of government involvement involved.

In the Netherlands, too, various governments are encouraging the realization of more charging stations. For example with subsidies.
