The developers from the Daybreak Game Company studio will be the new administrators of the now cult online version of the famous card game Magic: The Gathering. The information was published on their website by the developers together with Wizards of the Coast, the licensee who worked on the game from version 3 onwards and developed the original work of the Leaping Lizards studio. The move under the wings of Daybreak is to bring modernization of the entire processing and innovations that would help modernize the game and move it into the next era.

“We are excited to work with Wizards of the Coast to add Magic: The Gathering Online to our portfolio of other iconic online games,” said the developer’s representatives. They point out that they have titles like EverQuest Online, PlanetSide, DC Universe Online or Pirate of the Burning Sea in their catalog, so the legendary Magic cards will be in good company and undoubtedly good hands. “We look forward not only to continuing our operations, but to investing in the game in the years to come and further improving this most faithful video game processing,” said Daybreak CEO Ji Ham.

The connection is naturally praised by licensees as well. Wizards of the Coast has full confidence in the development team and the company’s management is convinced that the game will only flourish and attract other players from around the world. After all, even according to current statements, the people of Wizards of the Coast consider the online version of Magic: The Gathering to be one of their most important games, and the fact that it was the first title of similar importance, which they managed internally for many years, undoubtedly plays a role in this. They took over the work from the original developers of Leaping Lizard a year after the launch, when they were preparing their version number three during the working second version of the game. It was finally formally launched in 2008, but the main part of the development and operation was in the hands of WotC, who “get rid” of the games after eleven years.

What exactly Daybreak will do first is currently unknown, but WotC talked a few days ago that they planned for 2022 not only the smoothest possible handover of the development, which will continue to be worked on by some of the existing developers under Daybreak, but also faster issuance of new cards and updates, especially in the field of multiplayer and overall experience. But all this should come to the fore in a few months, when the devolution phase ends.
