The forgotten smartphone: Nokia N93
In ‘The forgotten smartphone’ section on DroidApp we discuss the most diverse devices, tablets and smartphones. This week it’s time for another gem; the Nokia N93.
Nokia N93
The Nokia N93 can rightly be called a gem, because it was quite striking. The device was presented at the same time as the previously discussed Nokia N73. The phone can actually be seen as a smartphone, given the possibilities that the device had to offer.
The device was striking in design. You could use the device in the most diverse ways. First of all as a clamshell, where you only use ‘the cover’. You could also keep the device closed and only open the screen. Another option was to open everything and rotate the screen to a position of your choice. The many turning options made the Nokia N93 heavy and large.
The package in which the Nokia N93 was delivered was very complete, as we will never see again. Where we already have to be happy with a charger, the Nokia N93 came with a stereo headset, a TV-out cable, a wrist strap, a cover, USB cable, a 128MB memory card and of course a charger. For the year 2006-2007, the Nokia N93 was rated as the best multimedia phone. The Finnish smartphone was also full of many possibilities and options in this area.
Multimedia and camera
A music player was present, but also an FM radio. Furthermore, it could handle Real Player and Flash Player. Nokia launched the N93 with Symbian S60, the third edition. There was a dual-core processor with a computing power of 332MHz. There was 64MB of RAM available and the 50MB internal storage space could be expanded with a memory card with a maximum size of 2GB. At the front was a simple front camera for video calls, for example.
On the back, the Nokia N93 was equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera. Like the previously discussed Samsung G800, this device was equipped with 3x optical zoom, which was rare at the time. Furthermore, the camera was equipped with autofocus, there was an LED flash and Nokia has collaborated with Carl Zeiss. Also present was digital image stabilization and a TV output with which you could view all content directly on the big screen. Filming was possible in 480p quality with a frame rate of 30fps, which Nokia promoted as DVD quality at the time!
Other features
The device was actually a smartphone. This is only because of the presence of WiFi. Also Bluetooth, an infrared port and a 1100 mAh battery can be found in the Nokia N93. Remarkably enough, GPS was absent. The Nokia had a 2.4 inch display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.
Was the Nokia N93 a sales smash? In any case, he was very sensitive to taste. Due to the generous dimensions, together with the thick camera module, it was a considerable device. It was mainly a smartphone for the real enthusiasts. Nokia brought the N93 on the market for an amount of around 550-600 euros. There isn’t much royalty-free footage of the Nokia N93, but hopefully this article from our weekly column has given you a good idea of the N93.
