The forgotten smartphone: LG Optimus L5
The LG Optimus L5 is already nine years old and we estimate the chance that you will still see it in the street scene today. Still, the device was quite popular among a large group of users a few years ago. We talk to you about the LG Optimus L5 in this edition of ‘The forgotten smartphone’.
LG Optimus L5
My first encounter with the then new L-series from LG was during the Mobile World Congress in 2012, in the Spanish city of Barcelona. So here we saw the L-series consisting of different models. This also included the LG Optimus L3, which we discussed earlier in our weekly column. LG placed the L5 in the middle segment and was the middle model in this series. Later a successor followed with the name LG Optimus L5 II.
The LG Optimus L5, which carried the model number E610, had a 4.0 inch screen. It offered a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels. Below the screen was the physical home button. In addition, there were the touch-sensitive keys that we saw on Android devices at the time. LG had equipped the smartphone with a Snapdragon S1 chipset with a computing speed of 800 MHz. The L5 offered 512MB of RAM while the storage space amounted to 4GB. You could expand this with a memory card. And that was necessary, because just over half of this remained for the end user. You didn’t find a front camera for taking selfies on the Optimus L5. There was a single 5 megapixel lens at the back.
If we look at the specifications of the LG Optimus L5, we see support for WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS and even NFC can be found on the L5. You had access to the 3G network with LG’s smartphone. The LG Optimus L5 appeared on the market with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and was later updated to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
LG released the Optimus L5 in the Netherlands in black and white. The price of the phone was around 250 euros. Later, the device quickly became much cheaper, because it was competitively priced in combination with prepaid.
