Rumor: iPad Pro will not get an OLED screen for a while

Apple will not give its iPad Pro an OLED screen until 2023 or 2024. The Korean news source reports that The Elec. Apple and Samsung are said to have stopped developing the first OLED screens for a new 10.86-inch iPad Pro. This iPad was reportedly scheduled for 2022.

According to the source, Apple wants OLED screens with a double-layer pixel structure. Such a structure doubles the brightness and quadruples the service life. However, Samsung does not yet produce similar screens – and so the OLED iPad has been delayed.

OLED screens have brighter colors, higher contrast and higher brightness than LCD screens. The current 12.9-inch iPad Pro has a mini LED screen, which is qua looks somewhat close to an OLED screen. According to previous rumors from Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, Apple originally planned to bring the superior display to the iPad as early as 2022.

LTPO technology also coming to iPad Pro

The current iPad Pro has a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. As a result, images look smooth and text remains razor-sharp, even when scrolling quickly. Since the refresh rate is variable, it can scale back to a minimum of 24Hz. This happens, for example, while reading an ebook or watching a movie – provided it was shot in 24 frames per second. A lower refresh rate consumes less energy.

However, the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max take it one step further with their LTPO screens. These screens have a refresh rate of at least 10Hz. The iPhone screens also have no fewer than 12 different refresh rates to switch between, where the current iPad Pro has to make do with only 5. According to The Elec the iPad and iPhone screens will be evenly matched in the future.
