The Best Mail App for iPhone (and 3 Alternatives)

The App Store is teeming with iPhone mail apps, but you only need one. We’ve tested them for you and this is the best mail app for iPhone and iPad.

Read on after the ad.

The best iPhone mail app: this is our favorite

A good app to receive, send and clean up your e-mails is indispensable. That’s why we tested the most popular mail apps in the App Store for you and picked a clear winner. In our opinion, this is the best iPhone mail app, followed by a number of other good alternatives. Have you chosen a mail app? Check out how to set this app as the default mail app on your iPhone.

The best mail app for iPhone: Spark

If there’s one mail app that we’ve enjoyed using for years, it’s Spark. Every few months an alternative is released that we try out, and then quickly return to this old trusted mail app.

Spark has everything you would expect from a modern mail app: a beautiful and clear design, support for practically all mail services and all the freedom to set up the app to your own taste. This way you can compose the taskbar at the bottom of the screen button by button and what happens when you swipe left or right.

In addition, the app has a ‘smart inbox’, which automatically distinguishes between important messages, newsletters and spam emails. As a user, you don’t have to do anything for this, but it still provides a tidy inbox.

Spark is also available for the iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac in addition to the iPhone, so you can use the same tidy inbox on all your Apple devices. That makes Spark everything you need when it comes to email, all packed into a beautifully designed and blazing-fast app.

Other good mail apps for iOS

Of course, Spark isn’t the only mail app for the iPhone. For example, do you find it annoying that Spark does not have a Dutch language setting? Or do you not trust the privacy policy of the app? Then, as far as we are concerned, these are three good alternatives to try out.

1. Gmail

Only use a Google email address, or do you also want to manage your Gmail account from a browser? Then Google’s default Gmail app is a great alternative to Spark. The app is regularly updated with new functions and has a clear design.

Because Gmail is available in every browser, it can be recommended if, for example, you can’t install apps on your work computer, but can still check your inbox from your browser.

2. Apple Mail

Of course, every iPhone already has a mail app installed by default: that of Apple itself. Although the app gets better with every major iOS update, we find the app too limited in terms of settings.

Spark has many more options and, in our opinion, looks clearer. Of course, that’s a matter of taste, so if you don’t like Spark, it’s smart to also give the standard iOS mail app a chance.

3. Airmail

Airmail has been around for many years and, like Spark, supports practically every mail service. What makes Airmail so great is its integration with many popular other apps, such as Evernote, OneDrive, Things, and Asana.

That gives you a lot of options to do things with specific emails directly from the app. Airmail is free to use, but for avid users who want all the features, Airmail Pro also has Airmail Pro for a fixed monthly fee.
