The best 65 inch TVs of 2022

Beautifully large and technically equipped for the coming years: the 65-inch television size class is equally attractive for gamers, sports enthusiasts, movie buffs and series fans. We introduce you to the best models of 2022.

A screen diagonal of 65 inches corresponds to the equivalent 165.1 cm. The width of the image is around 144 cm, depending on the model, and the height is around 81 cm. These used to be absurd values, but nowadays such large-format televisions are no longer a rarity. A logical step, because the right content has been there for a long time: series are being produced in ever more complex ways, action hits from the MCU set the tone for films, games shine on PS5 and XBox Series X in 4K and with ray tracing.

Some films want to make it big

Of the films of recent years, I was most impressed by “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve (view 4K Blu-ray at MediaMarkt): a masterpiece that sets its protagonists in scenes of enormous proportions. This is not shallow entertainment that you can casually listen to on your tablet on the train. No, this monumental Oscar winner needs space: a decent cinema, a good home cinema projector or a really big television.

Medion Life X16529

“The main thing is 65 inches, the rest doesn’t matter!” – So you really don’t have to go that far, because the Medion Life X16529 (view at Amazon) has for his small price but a lot to offer. As the name suggests, here is one QLED panel installed, which promises high contrasts and a deep black with “Quantum Dots”. The technology was developed by Samsung, it can be found in many South Korean models and is an interesting alternative to expensive OLED. It is amazing that Medion already offers this feature in this entry-level price range.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is also part of a decent TV these days. The Medion Life X16529 supports both standards HDR10 and Dolby Vision, so you are equipped for Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video. HDR10+ is not included, but that is tolerable.

However, the low price also creates limitations: the TV has stately features 4 HDMI inputs, but all only support HDMI 2.0. This limits 4K content to 60 Hz refresh rates. Premium models have long been at 100 or 120 Hz, which ensures noticeably smoother images in games with the new generation of consoles – and requires HDMI 2.1 inputs. You shouldn’t expect a miracle of sound from the integrated speakers either. After all, one headphone output (3.5 mm jack) installed, so that you can connect an existing stereo system. Otherwise, an optional soundbar (see GIGA purchase advice) is also recommended.

Advantages:

  • Low price
  • QLED panel

Disadvantages:

LG OLED-C1 (OLED65C16LA, OLED65C17LB)

GIGA tip Top marks wherever you look: The LG OLED-C1 (view at MediaMarkt) was released in different versions in 2021 and was completely convincing. The magazine Heimkino gave it an overall score of 1.0. At Stiftung Warentest, the verdict is 1.7 (“good”). The picture quality is very good – as long as you don’t place the TV in direct sunlight, that’s the impression plastic and authentic. LG manufactures its own OLED panels and obviously knows how to get the most out of them. The view from an angle in front (good viewing angle stability) and directly from the side is also nice: the panel is wafer-thin, which makes it look extremely valuable.

The LG OLED65C17LB is very low. This looks chic, but placing a soundbar directly in front of it proves to be difficult as parts of the image can be obscured (Image source: LG)

Games in their full glory

A great picture and support for next-gen consoles: These are the main reasons why I chose the LG OLED C16 (65 inches, see MediaMarkt). It is still top class in 2022, especially in somewhat darker environments without direct sunlight, the C1 shows off its OLED-typical excellent image quality. Thanks to 4k@120Hz and VRR current games on the PS5 and Xbox Series X are simply a feast for the eyes. Small disadvantage: The base of the C1 is very flat, the lower edge of the display is therefore only 4 centimeters above the TV table – a slightly higher soundbar directly in front of it can therefore cover something of the picture. You’d better measure that before you buy.

The equipment of the LG OLED C1 corresponds to what you would expect from a flagship: 4 HDMI ports (2.1), HDR support (Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10 Pro, HLG), Dolby Vision IQ, AMD FreeSync Premium and much more. In addition, the proven smart TV operating system LG webOS 6.0 is used, which is responsible for its good service is known. Good to know: The OLED65C17LB model has one Twin triple tuners (2 × DVB-T2/-C/-S2), while the OLED65C16LA model is only equipped with a single triple tuner (1 × DVB-T2/-C/-S2).

Advantages:

  • Top image quality in darkened rooms
  • Comprehensive equipment
  • Fluid presentation with 120 Hz display

Disadvantages:

  • Too low for many soundbars despite the base
  • No HDR10+

Samsung Neo QLED 4K QN95B (model year 2022)

The South Korean IT giant relies heavily on QLED (Quantum Dots) instead of OLED (still) – in combination with tiny ones mini LEDs it becomes “Neo QLED” as the backlight. The many individually controllable lighting zones and the benefit of the immense brightness of LED panels are intended to challenge the self-luminous OLED TVs, which are dependent on rather darkened rooms, for the best picture. Of the Samsung Neo QLED 4K QN95B (look at Samsung) is not just any standard model, but a technical announcement. The trade press cheered, so the magazine T3 awarded the “Platinum Award” and the highest rating of 5 stars. “The level of clarity is realistic beyond imagination. The HDR performance is stunning – literally in some cases,” says editor John Archer.

In bright rooms is the QN95B to be shortlisted, here it shows its strengths to the full. Some people might notice what is known as blooming in dark surroundings: A slight shimmer around individual bright objects (e.g. white letters) on a dark background.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ are quickly accessible on the remote control with their own buttons when the operating system comes Tizen for use. There are 4 HDMI connections (2.1) available for 4K gaming with up to 120Hz and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). A Twin triple tuners (2 × DVB-T2/-C/-S2) is integrated. Only the comparatively high price could currently prevent you from buying the Samsung 4K flagship.

Advantages:

  • Very bright image, also suitable for use in daylight
  • Comprehensive equipment
  • Fluid presentation with 120 Hz display

Disadvantages:
