The author of Syberia Benoît Sokal -apkrig died

After a long illness, comic artist, screenwriter and game designer Benoît Sokal died on May 28 at the age of 66, Microids, which publishes his series Syberia, announced. The talented Belgian has been very active in the field of video games for about the last quarter of a century, leaving an indelible mark on digital culture.

Sokal has been working on the latest Syberia in recent months

His first play was the 1999 Amerzone adventure inspired by Sokal’s own comics. He has been working on it since 1996. He was especially famous for the cult adventure series Syberia. The first episode was released in 2002 and the latest one, subtitled The World Before, is yet to hit the market. Sokal will not live to see this moment. However, even in these last months, according to Microids, he has been working on the game.

Benoît Sokal was born on June 28, 1954 in Brussels, where he graduated from an art school and began drawing for časopis Suivre magazine in 1978. He created the Inspector Canardo series and, in addition to working with Microids, founded his own gaming company with colleagues. The French studio White Birds Productions started operating in 2003 and specialized in adventure.

The team created games like Paradise, Sinking Island or Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals, but ties with Microids persisted and this company released, for example, the aforementioned Sinking Island. The Paris team employed about twenty-five people. However, due to financial problems, it ceased to function in 2011.

Benoît Sokal is described as one of the first comic book authors to fully embark on the world of video games on various fronts. For a time, he even worked as the art director of Microids. Despite his successes in the world of ones and zeros, however, this multifaceted talent never left the comics and continued to publish new cartoons.

After all, we owe it to him for helping to keep the adventure genre afloat at the most difficult time, when many foresaw its complete demise.

During his career, Benoît Sokal has received several prestigious awards as well as his titles. Microids expressed its deep sorrow at the loss and expressed its condolences to Sokal’s family and friends. And along with them mourn the fans who enjoy reminiscent of his work.

We can only add that we want Syberia: The World Before to be the best celebration of his life and work, and the developers have managed to bring the project to a successful conclusion. Sokal’s distinctive worlds and characters will live on. After all, we owe it to him for helping to keep the adventure genre afloat at the most difficult time, when many foresaw its complete demise.
